On Saturday, October 5, family, friends and neighbours gathered for a special naming ceremony at Alfred McCoy Park at 73 West Ridge Drive in Stittsville. Three of McCoy’s grandchildren joined us, including Barbara Bradley, Chris Bradley, and Ross Bradley, along with extended family members.

Alfred McCoy was a business leader in Stittsville and led the village in the progress of local recreation programs and facilities. McCoy founded A.H. McCoy Construction Ltd. in the early 1940s and it became one of Eastern Ontario’s largest road building companies.

In the 1950s and 60s, Alf (as everyone knew him) was instrumental in ensuring that a baseball field, tennis courts and an outdoor skating rink were installed on the current site of the Carleton Apartments, operated by Goulbourn Non-Profit Housing on Carleton Cathcart Street. It was then known as A.H. McCoy Park, and it provided a hub of all-season sports activity.

In 1971 the tennis courts and baseball fields were moved to Alexander Grove Park, and outdoor rinks were established at other locations in the community. The apartments were built on the site of the park in the 1980s.

In 2019, the City of Ottawa received a proposal from Keith Hobbs to name this piece of land Alfred McCoy Park, in recognition of his extensive community service and contributions to advancing recreation programs in Stittsville.

This park is a special place for nearby residents and includes a forest pathway that’s a popular spot for walkers and joggers. The large grassy area may someday be home to a community garden, or to a “mini-forest” pilot project.

(Press release via City of Ottawa / Le français suit)

The City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultation on the following naming proposal:

To name the park located at 73 West Ridge Drive, Alfred McCoy Park

Alfred McCoy (Ward 6 – Stittsville)

In recognition of his extensive community service and contributions to advancing recreation programs in Stittsville, the City of Ottawa has received a proposal to name the West Ridge Park B, Alfred McCoy Park.

Born in Goulbourn on what is now Mansfield Road, Mr. McCoy entered the trucking business at an early age. He transitioned to the road construction business, joining fellow Stittsville resident William J. Bell to form the McCoy-Bell Construction Company in the 1940s. The company eventually split, leading to the founding of the A.H. McCoyConstruction Company Limited, which became one of the largest road building firms in Eastern Ontario.

In 1963 the Village of Stittsville passed a resolution to create The A.H. McCoy Park, but development pressures in the 1980s led to construction of the Carleton Apartments for seniors where the park was located. This commemorative naming proposal seeks to honour Alfred McCoy’s historical services and donations to the community of Stittsville.

Nommer le parc West Ridge « B », situé au 73, promenade West Ridge, le « parc Alfred-McCoy »;

Alfred McCoy (quartier 6 – Stittsville)
