The Friends of Stittsville Wetlands are rolling out a new Turtle Conservation Program for the Goulbourn Wetland Complex and its two tributaries, Poole Creek and Flowing Creek.

To gauge community support for this initiative, the Friends of Stittsville Wetlands hosted an “All About Turtles” Earth Day Forum in April. The event raised public awareness about turtles, conservation efforts, and explored the key elements and benefits of rolling out a community science program for our community.

The Friends of Stittsville Wetlands Turtle Conservation Program will be rolled out in two phases from 2026 to 2027. Learn more about our eight native freshwater turtle species, how you can help them, and the Turtle Conservation Program by visiting the Friends of Stittsville Wetlands website.

(This is the latest in a series of stories about people in Stittsville who make a difference in our community. If you have a suggestion for a person or organization that we should profile, please contact us!

Poole Creek stretches and meanders from one end of the community to the other, surrounded by majestic trees that stand sturdy on watch over our neighbourhoods. For Bruce Dudley, the stewardship of our lands is a passion that runs deeper than the wetlands and stretches farther than our community borders.

“I have been passionate about the environment my entire life,” says Bruce, a 24-year resident of Stittsville. “Growing up, I spent a lot of time in nature and developed a passion for protecting our native species.”

Bruce recently retired from the Delphi Group where he held the post of Senior Vice President. In his most recent role, he provided high level strategic advice to corporations on sustainability and climate change to effect change in corporate and public behaviour. He is currently the CEO and founder of Your Forest Canada.

Bruce lives his passion beyond the corporate environment and pours hours and effort into the Stittsville Community. This year will mark three clean up missions of Poole Creek. And we are not just talking about garbage pick-up. Dressed in hip waiters and determination, Bruce organizes a crew of volunteers to undertake clean up efforts along the creek on an annual basis. He works closely with Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority and the Ottawa River Keepers to ensure the health of the delegate ecosystem.

Bruce has also led the charge in advocating for mini-forests, woodland clean-ups, and has worked closely with Nature Metrics, the local conservation authorities, and Network of Nature to bring education on biodiversity to our community. He has collaborated with local schools to involve students in firsthand data collection along Poole Creek. (Did you know: Poole Creek is home to more than thirty species of fish.) Most recently, he is teaming up with the Friends of the Wetlands to help in conservation efforts, and the restoration of ecological significant woodlots in the community.

“If you want to be involved in real change, stay connected to the community. Be aware of what is happening and join volunteer efforts,” says Bruce. “We live in a great community, with engaged citizens. Real, positive impact is possible.”

CHANGER LES CHOSES : Bruce Dudley
