Today at Transit Commission, I supported a plan that will see OC Transpo transition to a zero-emission bus fleet over the next 15 years. This is great news and a major step forward to meeting our emission reduction targets to tackle climate change. The plan goes to City Council for final approval next week.

Overview:

Zero Emission Buses for OC Transpo (PDF)

Here’s what’s planned:

OC Transpo will negotiate an agreement with the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and apply for funding from Infrastructure Canada to replace as many as 450 buses by 2027. As older diesel buses are retired, the bus fleet (nearly 1,000 buses) would become fully electrified by 2036. The full cost of new buses from 2022 to 2027 is estimated at $986-million.

The first batch of e-buses would be purchased in 2022, with 74 40-foot battery buses for OC Transpo. Funding for the purchase comes from money already earmarked for diesel buses, augmented by Infrastructure Canada with financing from the Canada Infrastructure Bank.

For the first batch of buses, staff are recommending battery-electric buses and the most reliable and appropriate for Ottawa’s climate and geography. electricity and charging infrastructure for the transition will be supplied by Hydro Ottawa, and upgrades will be required to Ottawa’s transit garages to provide charging stations.

Battery buses are being recommended for now, but as technology advances other fuel sources will be considered such as hydrogen fuel cells.

Zero-Emission Buses for OC Transpo (PDF)
