UPDATE: Council unanimously approved this motion on March 11, 2026.

Wednesday morning at City Council I will be introducing a notice of motion for a commemorative naming to honour John Curry and John Brummell.

John Curry was the long-time editor and publisher of the Stittsville News, as well as an avid local historian and author. He also served as a Catholic school board trustee for over 20 years. John Brummell worked for decades as a writer and photographer for the Stittsville News and was involved in many volunteer organizations in the community.

If approved, the new park at 785 Cope Drive would be renamed “Brummell-Curry Park”, in honour of their outstanding service and enduring impact on the community of Stittsville and the City of Ottawa.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-20176" class="wp-image-20176 size-full" src="https://glengower.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/john-curry-john-brummell.jpg" alt="“The Two Johns”.

La version française suit

Janet Stavinga was the final Mayor of Goulbourn Township before amalgamation, and the first City Councillor for Stittsville in the new City of Ottawa. These are the memories that she shared at the CARDELREC–Goulbourn 25th Anniversary celebration on November 25, 2025.

“Goulbourn Township is spending like drunken sailors.”

“Sports Palace approval flawed.”

“A swimming pool is a luxury we can not afford.”

These were some of the headlines in the fall of 1999.

The years 1997–2000 were challenging yet exciting for Goulbourn Township and Council. Our community—especially Stittsville—was growing rapidly, and we were tasked with delivering major projects: the Stittsville Public Library, Fire Station 81, the Abbott and Iber Road extensions to support our Business Park, and new recreational services.

At the same time, we prepared to expand Goulbourn Hydro beyond Richmond through acquiring Hydro One assets—an effort by the Goulbourn Hydro Commission championed by Chair John Curry.

This period also coincided with the movement towards major municipal restructuring. In August 1999, Minister Steve Gilchrist announced a process that would drastically reform municipal government for specific regions, including Ottawa-Carleton. Ultimately, this process would lead to the amalgamated City of Ottawa.

However, the story of the Goulbourn Recreation Complex began many years before. In 1991, through the vision of the former Mayor Anton Wytenburg, his Council, and Goulbourn Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, a Recreation Master Plan was commissioned. This report set the stage for an arena and indoor aquatic facility.

Between 1995 – 1997, under Mayor Paul Bradley, Council began the implementation of these plans, including the completion of a User Needs Study and determining where best to locate a proposed recreational facility. Ultimately, we selected the Abbott Street West site, securing a conditional offer and a partnership with the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board to co-locate a new high school.

Discussions for the Goulbourn Recreation Complex further evolved with a new Council in 1997. The project was advanced with a strong focus on fiscal responsibility.

We acquired the land in fall 1998—preserving 19 acres of cedar forest, now known as Kemp Woods—some months after the conclusion of an Ontario Municipal Board hearing.

Council held numerous community forums to discuss this proposed initiative, while also exploring avenues to finance this project through private-public partnerships.

Ultimately, Council chose a municipally funded facility as the best value. Community groups, including the Recreation Advisory Committee, Richmond Munster Minor Hockey, Residents for a Pool in Goulbourn, Goulbourn Minor Soccer, amongst many others, helped shape the design and construction phases.

Nearly a decade after the original Recreation Master Plan, we broke ground on November 20, 1999.

Working with the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic School Board, we shared resources to reduce land and servicing costs. Infrastructure was installed to support future expansion, including a second ice pad and multi-purpose space.

Council also approved the reconstruction and 5 km extension of Shea Road to connect the communities of Richmond, Munster and Ashton to our new facility.

We also gratefully accepted an in-kind donation from Thomas Cavanagh Construction Limited for the construction of the parking lot to serve the sports fields.

Just over a year later, we celebrated the opening of Phase 1 of the Goulbourn Recreation Complex on November 25, 2000.

Phase 1 of the Complex featured an NHL-sized sledge-hockey–accessible rink, an Olympic-sized six lane training pool with a play pool and hydrotherapy areas, and new outdoor sports fields.

Phase 2—a multi-purpose space and second ice pad—was later built by the City of Ottawa under Councillor Shad Qadri and Mayor Jim Watson.

Over time, our two ice pads and our gymnasium were dedicated to local sports heroes including:

Matt Bradley in recognition of his excellence in hockey in 2013.

Erica Wiebe, after winning the 2016 Olympic gold for wrestling in Rio.

Katie Xu and Jack Fan, ambassadors for the special needs community, in the sport of figure skating, in 2018.

These plaques can be viewed along with the revived Stittsville Sports Hall of Fame resurrected in 2024 by my former colleague, Councillor Allan Ryan, Bob Mills, our former Parks and Recreation Director, and a dedicated selection committee, with plaques honouring Stittsville’s greatest athletes, coaches, and officials.

In the foyer, check out the names of the many recipients of the Stittsville Volunteer Awards, which began in 1990 under the leadership of Mayor Anton Wytenburg, with the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year and then expanded by future Goulbourn Councils. These awards continued under the leadership of former Councillor Qadri and now Councillor Gower

I extend my deep appreciation to the final Goulbourn Township Council (1997–2000)—Louise Beggs, Mike Bryan, Stephen Lewis, and the late Dwayne Barkley.

Your voices around the Council table during those challenging years always reflected the interests of your constituents, including holding space for the diversity of views – not always an easy task. You always looked to the future – beyond election cycles.

Dwayne’s advocacy, in particular, ensured our rink accommodated sledge hockey.

As a Council, we were equally grateful for the dedication of our municipal team: Solicitor Jim McInich, Planning and Economic Development Director Danny Page, Recreation Director Bob Mills and his staff, and the late Bob Townend, our Chief Administrative Officer, whose exceptional financial acumen made all of these community investments possible.

Through the collective efforts of Council, staff, volunteers, and residents, we built a facility that strengthens physical and mental well-being and serves as a vital social and cultural gathering place. Twenty-five years on, this facility continues to bring our community together – to connect us, to celebrate our diversity, to build relationships, and to grow together.

Congratulations to all—this 25th anniversary celebration is yours.

(We asked residents to share their fondest memories of John Curry, who passed away recently at age 75. John was long-time newspaper writer and editor, history keeper, school board trustee, author, playwright, volunteer. He served our community for nearly half a century with unwavering kindness and generosity. His work made a difference in the lives of many people in the community. For residents who might not be familiar with John’s story, you should read “John Curry carries on”, an article from StittsvilleCentral.ca published in 2018. -GG.)

John Curry was one of the kindest, most sincere gentlemen I have had the pleasure to know. He would show up without fanfare, to make sure all our “horsy” events were photographed and covered in our favourite local newspaper, The Stittsville News. We were thrilled when he advertised our “Christmas Carol Service” at the Farm. We were hoping for 100 guests that special Evening to share in the Christmas Spirit. HALF of Stittsville showed up thanks to John’s encouragement! John always had time to share a greeting with everyone. Although he appeared unassuming, his presence meant more to me than he will ever know. He watched me grow from a young, energetic Girl Friday to the Steward of Sunset Farms. His gentle hug was right there when I said a final goodbye to my husband. I won’t forget him. John’s light shines on through his nephew, Pat, his grand-nephew Liam, his grand-niece Emma and the rest of his special family.

I first met John Curry in the early 1990s when he covered our sons’ basketball games at Goulbourn Middle School and South Carleton High School in the 1990s. He and John Brummel were the dynamic duo at the Stittsville News, with Curry handling the story and Brummel the photos. Curry had a sincere interest in his community and was an exemplary reporter. He carried his small note pad with him and showed up wherever there was an event. When Brummell retired in 2017 with the demise of the Stittsville News, John Curry picked up his camera and did double duty. John’s reporting was uncannily accurate for a man who took so few notes. I remain astonished at the detailed reports he published based on long interviews that left so few scratchings in his notebook. As a member of the Ottawa West Arts Association, I was often on the receiving end of a John Curry interview and photo shoot. I can’t recall how often he had me posing on a ladder pretending to hang a picture. John was a faithful reporter of all things to do with OWAA and the community at large. When we asked him to join the OWAA Board of Directors he willingly agreed. John was usually the one taking pictures but I turned the tables on him a few times. John Curry was loved in the Goulbourn community and we will miss him.

I lived in Richmond for many years and raised my 2 boys there. I was very actively involved in the community as a volunteer in many areas. Scout leader, Playgroup Coordinator, Vice President of the Nursery School and President of the Parents Council at St. Phillip’s school just to name a few. I was also the Recreation Director at Richmond Lodge. John and I crossed paths so many times as he wrote about events in our community on a regular basis. He was so kind and funny and we always shared a laugh. He was so dedicated to all the communities in Goulbourn and wanted the residents to shine. He understood the value of building community and highlighted this throughout his career as a writer. So many children grew up knowing John as the newspaper man that wanted to know about their stories. His smile was so welcoming and he always had time for the full story! At the time my name was Kathy Curry and people used to ask me if I was related to John..as my photo was always in the paper( haha)..same last name. That’s what happens when you are involved in so many activities! John will forever be remembered for his dedication to his community, his kindness to others and his warm smile. I will miss him.

When I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2007 on a routine colonoscopy, my way of dealing with it was to talk about it. I encouraged my friends to talk to their doctor about having a colonoscopy. The day I received my diagnosis, I came home and wrote a letter to the editor and hand delivered it to the Stittsville News office on Main Street encouraging everyone to talk to their doctor. A couple of days later I got a call from John asking if I would be willing to be interviewed for an article for the newspaper to which I agreed. He came out and the article with my photo was published. It got picked up by The Citizen as well. I’m happy to say that I am coming up on 15 years cancer free but more importantly, I had people stop me on the street in Stittsville thanking me for going public. They said that as a result of the article, they got the procedure done and encouraged their family to do so as well. John was a compassionate man and will be missed in Stittsville.

We were so fortunate to have had John active in the Goulbourn community for so long. Generations of school kids, sports teams, community groups, business owners and politicians saw their photos grace the pages of the Stittsville News. Volunteers often got special attention — John’s way of saying “Thank you, you are appreciated”. Generally quiet and unassuming, John was a good listener who appreciated all points of view (noting them on a much folded square of paper he kept in his jacket). He was not afraid to ask tough questions, nor to offer a divergent opinion, either in his capacity as a board member or as editor of the Stittsville News. But underneath that measured exterior lurked a bit of a ham. ohn liked nothing better than portraying a historical character like Jackson Stitt (Stittsville’s namesake) or donning a brunette wig and miniskirt to play the role of outgoing City Councillor, and former Goulbourn Mayor, Janet Stavinga for her farewell gala. Goulbourn will certainly miss you John. See you on the flip side … keep practicing that poetry.

On behalf of the Stittsville Art Mad artists, I would like to express our sincere condolences to the friends and family of John Curry. We were very saddened to hear of his passing. John faithfully covered and supported our Art Mad shows in the Village Square Park from 2013 onwards, as well as our many Stittsville Public Library Art Space exhibitions. We are grateful for his championship over the years and have appreciated his tireless efforts to link our community together. His entertaining stories and anecdotes of people’s accomplishments have made a mark on many! He will be greatly missed.

Most of us knew John Curry as the consummate community newsman, present at every event with his pen, pad, and camera. I first encountered John early in my reporting career, more than 20 years ago. He was witty, easy to talk to, always encouraging, and his detailed accounts of area goings on were a shining example of what makes small-town life and community newspapers so special. That positive impression only grew over time. John enjoyed collecting and preserving our stories, but he was also an essential part of the community. He was everywhere, always busy with a new project: researching and writing books, poetry and scripts, producing movies, helping with Canada Day activities, sponsoring scholarships, serving on volunteer boards, and sharing his vast knowledge and community lore. He seemed to know everyone, and always made time to talk. I feel lucky to have known John Curry. He was a lovely person, and his energy and dedication to community remain inspiring. Thanks, John, for everything.

With the passing of John Curry, an enormous hole has been left in the lives of many people in Stittsville. From when had first taken over the running of the Stittsville News in 1975, and in later years with the News’ successors, John had not only been the voice of the community in his paper and the conscience of the community in many of his incisive and thoughtful editorials and reports, but had been unwavering in his support of the efforts of residents and local organizations in making sure that we grew, and continues to grow, into the Stittsville we have today. John ensured that almost every public event that took place in the lives of local residents was faithfully reported and if one needed to know what was happening in the village, one only had to open that week’s local newspaper. As an extension of his professional support for Stittsville, John was been an influential member of many local groups devoted to enhancing the quality of life in the community, including the area LACAC , the Goulbourn Historical Society, the Goulbourn Museum Inc., the Rotary Club of Ottawa – Stittsville. For his pivotal and enduring influence in the community and its development, the Stittsville Village Association nominated John for the Order of Ottawa in 2012 and 2013. Regrettably, he was never recognized. We, like the rest of the community, have lost a dear friend. To say he will be missed would be a massive understatement.

We have been residents of Stittsville for over 35 years. John Curry’s Stittsville news was an important part of our community connection. In honour of his contribution, we think Village Square Park, Main St. Stittsville should be renamed in his honour. We like many residents will miss him.

When I moved to Kanata I had my eldest daughter enrolled in a split Grade 4/5 class. She was a January baby and as a result often matched or exceeded the height and maturity of the Grade 4 schoolmates. The teacher for the class mistook her for a December born 5th Grade candidate. Thus she was instructed for the year as a 5th Grade student. She excelled and passed all tests with great marks. When it came time for grade advancement the principal decided she would have to repeat Grade 5, so she would be in school with her similar aged peers. Of course we as parents objected. John as a member of the school board agreed with our objection and my eldest progressed to Grade 6 and throughout schooling resulting in her exceptante in advanced high school curriculum classes and Engineering course acceptance at two Ottawa universities. She graduated with honours. Thanks again to John for his support and reasoned response to our school board request. My remembrance of John Curry as a member of the OCDSB.

John was a pillar of the community and a keeper of its history. For us at the Catholic Board, he was also a longstanding Trustee. I’m sure I don’t need to enumerate his contributions to community. My personal interest is that I had been a Vice-Principal at Sacred Heart and I am a resident of Stittsville. I saw first-hand how important John has been and I valued his character as a person. It feels like a natural that he should be commemorated in some way.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of John Curry. Shortly before Christmas, I contacted John to share a surprise event my husband was doing for a local subdivision in Stittsville. On Christmas Eve, he quietly walks around Porter Place as Santa Claus. Notices go out to the residents, parents plan for their children to look out windows, stand ‘conveniently’ on the front steps. The children when the spy Santa, are sooooo happy. When I contacted John, he didn’t hesitate to say he’d be there. On Christmas Eve! He was there when my husband first started the walk and was still there, when my husband finished his walk. What a kind, lovely man to come out, when he could have been home with his own family. God love him. He will be missed.

Il va me manquer.
