La version française suit

The City of Ottawa has received a Site Plan Control application for new high school at 5431 Fernbank Road. The site is located between Cope and Fernbank, just west of the Walmart plaza.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board is proposing to build a three-storey school (grades 7 to 12) with approximately 14,771 square metres of gross floor area. The development also includes two sports fields, an outdoor classroom, a parking lot located south of the school to accommodate 175 parking spaces, a separate drop off area and visitor parking.

The building would be located at the corner of Cope Drive and Atlas Terrace with vehicular access from Fernbank Road and Atlas Terrace. A bus-only drop-off access is provided from Fernbank Road. The plan also notes an area for a future addition fronting Cope Drive and for 30 portables to be located adjacent to the sports field.

The City has received a Site Plan Control application from the Ottawa Catholic School Board to build a new Catholic elementary school at 60 Defence Street. Funding for this proposed school was previously announced last fall.

The site, at the southwest corner of Cope Drive and Defence Street, is currently vacant. The site plan control application would permit the development a single storey elementary school with a gross floor area of 4,630 square metres.

The main entrance of the proposed building will be on Defence Street and has been designed to be pedestrian oriented. Lay-bys are proposed along Defence Street and Cope Drive to facilitate the pick-up and drop-off of students. A total of 51 parking spaces are provided in a parking lot located south of the school building, which will be accessed from Defence Street.

The school board had reserved the site for a future school during the development phase of the surrounding community. It is zoned I1B, or minor institutional zone, which permits schools. A Minor Variance application is required to permit the proposed 4.5 metre setback along Defence Street. The roadway modifications associated with this development include the construction of on-street lay-bys along both Defence Street and Cope Drive.

More information about the proposal is available on the City’s DevApps site…

This week, MPP Goldie Ghamari and the Ontario Government announced over half a billion dollars for construction of new schools, including a Catholic elementary school in the Fernbank area of Stittsville.

The $12.4-million project will include space for over 500 students, and two child care rooms with 39 licensed child care spaces. The school will be located at on Cope Drive at Defense Street.

This is great news for Stittsville. Local schools are crucial to the development of healthy communities and this project is very much needed in the growing Fernbank area. It’s one of several upcoming school projects in our community:

l’école secondaire publique de Stittsville (approuvée en mars 2018, ouverture prévue en 2022);

l’école élémentaire publique de Stittsville/Fernbank (approuvée en juillet 2020);
