Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is encouraging residents to protect themselves and their loved ones this respiratory illness season by receiving recommended vaccines. Starting Monday, October 26, COVID-19 and flu vaccines will be available to everyone aged six months and older who lives, works or attends school in Ontario. Vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness, complications and hospitalization from respiratory viruses.

Respiratory viruses, including influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19, increase in circulation each fall and winter and can lead to serious illness, complications and hospitalizations, particularly among those at higher risk.

During the 2025-26 season, there was a sharp increase in influenza cases and hospitalizations among children, highlighting how quickly influenza can spread and the importance of getting vaccinated early.

COVID-19 and influenza (flu) vaccines

People can receive their COVID-19 and flu vaccines through their primary care provider, where available, or at participating pharmacies for those aged two years and older. Many pharmacies offer both walk-in services and appointments. OPH encourages people to contact their primary care provider or book an appointment with their pharmacy, and to call ahead to confirm vaccine availability. COVID-19 and flu vaccines can be safely received during the same appointment.

OPH will be offering COVID-19 and flu vaccines to eligible populations who face barriers to accessing vaccination through a pharmacy or their primary care provider. Eligible groups include newcomers without OHIP and children under age five and their household members.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the lungs and airways. While RSV usually causes mild illness, it is more likely to result in serious complications in infants, children under 24 months with certain medical conditions, and older adults. Vaccines and other immunization options are available to help prevent severe illness and hospitalization caused by RSV.

Reducing the spread of respiratory illness

Although vaccines offer the best protection against severe respiratory illness, simple measures can help reduce the spread of viruses like washing your hands often, avoiding touching your face, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, disinfecting high-touch surfaces and wearing a mask. If possible, stay home when sick and avoid visiting people at high risk of severe illness, including those in hospitals, long-term care or retirement homes.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reminding residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Routine mosquito trapping and testing for West Nile virus (WNV) have confirmed a positive mosquito pool in Ottawa. This is the first confirmation of WNV in Ottawa this year since OPH began routine seasonal monitoring in June. There have been no confirmed or probable human cases of West Nile virus reported in Ottawa this year. As of Sunday, July 26, there have been two reported human cases in Ontario this year.

Mosquitoes can pose a risk for WNV infection until the first hard frosts of the fall. Residents are reminded that even as the weather begins to cool in the fall, there remains an increased risk for human WNV infection. Residents are also asked to help reduce mosquito breeding sites around their homes by removing any unnecessary standing water and regularly treating or replacing water in use, like ornamental pools or bird baths.

West Nile virus(link is external) is an infection spread primarily by the northern house mosquito (Culex pipiens). Most people will not develop any symptoms if infected with WNV but about 20 per cent may experience flu-like symptoms such as a fever, headache, muscle aches and possibly a rash, that usually appears two to fourteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Less than one per cent of WNV infections lead to very serious illness, in which WNV invades the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). This risk is higher in people with weakened immune systems and risk increases with age.

Ottawa Public Health’s proactive approach to West Nile virus includes weekly mosquito surveillance to monitor virus activity and assess the risk to residents. OPH, in collaboration with partners, regularly applies larvicide in City-owned roadside storm sewer catch-basins to reduce populations of mosquitoes that spread West Nile virus. When necessary, mosquito larvicidal treatment may also be applied to other standing water sites on City property, such as ditches and storm water management ponds.

Summer is just around the corner, bringing with it the opening of pools, beaches, and water parks. Whether you are enjoying a day at the beach or time at the pool, everyone has a role to play in water safety.

Water safety knowledge is essential. Drowning is fast and silent, and most drownings occur between May and September. Prevention is key!

Recently, Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Dive, Rescue and Trails Unit, Ottawa Fire Services, the Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Drowning Prevention Coalition and OPH came together at Britannia Beach for a community drowning prevention event focused on safety, awareness, and practical tips for residents.

Here are some important water safety tips to keep you and your family safe:

Always keep children within arms’ reach, in and around the water. Never leave a child alone, whether it is in the bathtub, a swimming pool or any body of water such as rivers or lakes.

Ensure children and weaker swimmers wear properly fitted lifejackets or personal flotation devices (PFD) in and around the water.

Don’t swim alone. Always swim with others who know how to swim.

Stay sober. Do not use alcohol, cannabis or drugs when swimming or supervising others in the water.

Keep safety equipment and a phone close to the pool.

Ensure that your backyard pool is not accessible to children by using multiple layers of protection (e.g.: fences, self-closing gates)

Where lifeguard supervision is available, swim in areas where lifeguards are on duty. One percent of fatal drownings in Ontario occur in lifeguarded settings.

Make sure you and your family members learn to swim. Swimming is a life skill that lasts a lifetime.

It’s important to note that unlike pools, open water has additional risks to consider such as weather-related changes, and hidden hazards like rocks or sudden drop offs and fast flowing currents. Always swim between the red/yellow flags, inside the designated swimming areas and ensure to be aware of your surroundings.

Remember water safety is everyone’s responsibility and essential to ensure a safe experience.

Ticks have the potential to spread infections to residents of Ottawa, including Lyme Disease. Here are some tips from Ottawa Public Health on how you can protect yourself:

Apply a Health Canada approved insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin to exposed skin and clothing

Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, shoes, and socks to cover exposed skin

Tuck your pants into your socks

Wear light-coloured clothing to spot ticks more easily; this is also appropriate for mosquitoes as they are attracted to darker colours

Stay on the trails when hiking in the woods and other natural areas. Enjoy the mowed/maintained areas in parks and playing fields, while being mindful of tick habitat, such as tall grass and leaf litter.

Do a “full body” check on yourself, your children, and pets. Pay careful attention around your toes, back of the knees, groin, armpits and scalp.

Spring is here and warm weather has finally arrived, making it easier to be physically active outdoors. Whether participating in cycling, inline skating, scooter riding or skateboarding, head injuries can happen. The effects of a head injury can last a lifetime, changing the way a person walks, talks, plays, and thinks.

Helmets are an important piece of safety equipment for people of all ages and all abilities! They can reduce the risk of serious brain and head injuries by absorbing force from a fall or a hit to the head.  Did you know that in Ontario, it is mandatory for anyone under the age of 18 to wear a certified helmet while riding a bicycle?

For helmets to protect you, they must fit properly and securely. It’s also important to choose the right helmet for the right activity. Each helmet is designed and tested to protect your head from the impact common to an activity or sport. Some helmets are made to protect against one hard fall (single impact) and others are made to protect against many impacts (multi-impact).

For recommendations on which type of helmet to wear for a specific sport or activity, the associated standards and more, visit Parachute Canada. It is also important to refer to the manufacturer’s owner’s manual for guidance about the intended use, fitting, care, and maintenance of a helmet.

Buying a helmet

Here is what to look for when buying a new helmet:

Buy the recommended helmet for the activity or sport.

Look for the certification sticker found on the inside or outside of the helmet.

Try the helmet on before you buy it. Helmets should fit snug and comfortable. Shake your head from side to side and from front to back; the helmet should not move around.

When buying a helmet for a child, buy one that fits now, and not one they will grow into.

Never buy a used helmet. You may not know if the helmet has been in a crash, or how old the helmet is.

Take your child to the store so they can try on different ones.

Check your child’s helmet at the beginning of every season to make sure it still fits properly.

How to wear a bicycle helmet

Put the helmet on so that it is not tilting backward or forward. Then check the following:

Two fingers distance from helmet to eyebrow

V-shape straps around each ear

One finger between chin and fastened strap

Shake your head up and down and side to side. Your helmet should stay in place and feel comfortably snug.

Here are some general tips for wearing a helmet:

Do not wear a hat under a helmet. It will change the way the helmet fits. A hijab under a bicycle helmet is okay. Check the fit and readjust the helmet if needed.

Baseball hats, toques, big hair clips and headphones should not be worn under a helmet.

Ponytails should be low on the neck.

There are now certified helmets available for some sports (such as for riding a bike or a kick scooter) for children who wear their hair knotted on top of their head (such as when wrapped in a patka).

Do not put stickers on a helmet. They may make the plastic of the helmet weak and may void the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) certification and/or the manufacturers’ warranty. They can also hide cracks and other potential damage.

When to replace a helmet

The plastics of a helmet dry out and may become brittle over time. Many helmets can also only take one impact before they must be replaced. You can learn more about single versus multiple impact helmets, by visiting Parachute Canada. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and replace a helmet:

After a crash or large impact.

When it does not fit anymore.

If the helmet has a crack or is dented.

When the straps are frayed, torn, or do not work.

Every five years.

If you’re heading out to enjoy winter fun like skating, skiing, or sledding, remember to keep safety top of mind for yourself and your loved ones. A properly fitted helmet, used for the sport or activity it is designed for, can help protect your head and reduce the risk of a serious brain injury.

Did you know? A hockey helmet is best for both hockey and skating as it is made for the kind of falls that happen on ice. A ski helmet is designed for impacts most common in downhill skiing, and for use in cold weather.

For information on choosing the right helmet, how to wear a helmet, when it’s time for a replacement and more, visit: Helmet Safety – Ottawa Public Health

Concussion Awareness

A concussion is a brain injury. It results from a blow to the head, face or neck, or a blow to the body that jars the head, causing the brain to move rapidly inside of the skull. A concussion can cause a variety of symptoms such as confusion, headache, fatigue, vision or balance problems, irritability, nausea, vomiting and more. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to stop activity immediately and seek medical attention right away. Early recognition of concussion, proper medical assessment, and appropriate management make a difference in recovery.

Originally published December 5, 2025

La version française suit

Earlier this week I dropped in to the Stittsville Food Bank to check in with Theresa Qadri, the organization’s Chair. She says that December is always their busiest time of year, with donations ramping up as the need continues to grow. They expect to serve well over 400 families leading up to the holidays, providing basic food and personal hygiene items as well as food hampers and gifts to people in need.

Every trip to the grocery store is a reminder that food prices are continuing to rise. A recent report from Ottawa Public Health revealed some staggering data about food insecurity for local families.

The Ottawa Public Health 2025 Nutritious Food Basket Survey found that:

25.7% of Ottawa households experienced food insecurity in 2024.

That number is trending upwards. It was at 15.3% in 2019.

Children, as well as Black and Indigenous communities, are disproportionately affected by food insecurity.

Food costs have increased in recent years, rising from $11,399/year in 2018 to $14,909/year in 2024 for a family of four.

Inadequate and/or unstable income is the root cause of food insecurity. For example, households relying on Ontario Works (OW) or minimum wage cannot meet their basic needs when housing costs are factored in. There is not enough money left.

The provincial allowances for both infant formula and nutritional support during pregnancy and breastfeeding are grossly inadequate compared to current market prices.

(Food insecurity refers to inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial constraints, ranging from concerns about running out of food to skipping meals.)

Some examples, after accounting for typical food and housing costs:

A family of four in Ottawa making the median household income would have about $488/month left over for all other expenses.

A single adult receiving Ontario Disability Support Program payments would be overspending by about $42 each month.

A single person making minimum wage would have about $18 left over each month for all other expenses.

These factors are driving more and more people to local food banks, even people who are employed full-time. The Ottawa Food Bank’s 2025 Hunger Report shows a 101% increase in visits to the food bank since 2019.

The report also notes: “Food banks were created as a temporary response to crisis and have since become a permanent part of the social safety net. For more than 40 years, food banks in Ottawa and across Canada have provided emergency support while food insecurity rates continue to rise. While we can’t replace livable wages, strong income supports, deeply affordable housing, and decent work, the network works every day to fill the gaps left by broken systems and advocate for lasting policy solutions that will end food insecurity.”

Here’s how you can help:

Donate money. Most food banks have an online option, including the Stittsville Food Bank.

Donate food. Drop off a non-perishable food item at your local grocery store, or directly to a food bank.

Mark your calendar for December 13, when OC Transpo and the Stittsville Food Bank will host their annual “Fill the Bus” campaign at Brown’s Independent and No Frills.

Write to your MP and MPP and express your support for income-based policies, such as adequate social assistance rates, a living minimum wage, and a guaranteed basic income program, to effectively address the systemic reasons behind food insecurity. Charitable food programs should not be seen as a permanent solution.

The Stittsville Food Bank is powered entirely by volunteers and relies on the generosity of our community. They work tirelessly to make sure no one in our community goes hungry, but the need is constant. A huge THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who work so hard to help our community.
