La version française suit

A few weeks back in my weekly video update, I mentioned the possibility of a new extension of the Poole Creek Pathway through Amberwood and Amberlakes. I wanted to provide some more information about where we are at with that project.

Background

Decades ago, Goulbourn Township and home developers built a network of walking paths along Poole Creek, including next to Johnny Leroux Arena, and through neighbourhoods including Wyldewood, Amberwood, Amberway, Forest Creek, and Fringewood.

Going back about 25 years or more, there was a “Poole Creek Pathway Committee” formed by residents to advocate for expanding the pathway, including a northern leg at the western edge of Wyldewood, parallel to Stittsville Main Street towards Wildpine Court.

In response to requests from residents, in 2021 I asked City staff to evaluate three potential corridors for additional pathways.

Corridor 1: An extension that would connect from the existing Poole Creek Pathway, heading north towards Wildpine Court and the shopping plaza.

Corridor 2: A pathway through the hydro corridor between Amberlakes and Amberwood.

Corridor 3: A pathway north of Hesse Crescent in Wyldewood, connecting to the existing pathways between Hesse Crescent and Pine Bluff Trail.

In 2022, the City of Ottawa applied and received funding the Federal government’s Active Transportation Fund for a feasibility study: “This feasibility study will yield recommended options for the design and construction of transportation infrastructure to park amenities, commercial development on Stittsville Main Street, and the promote active recreation uses along the pathway including cycling, running and walking by Stittsville residents.”

The study was conducted by WSP and completed in 2025.

Study considerations and findings

WSP evaluated several factors as part of their feasibility study, including:

Property ownership and boundaries

Road allowance and right-of-way

Utility mapping and locations

Existing pathways

Flood plain mapping

Species at risk locations

Zoning and planned developments

Community stakeholders

Traffic studies

Collision history data

Through the study, they identified several constraints along the three corridors, including:

Land ownership constraints

Hydrological & environmental issues (much of this area is within a floodplain)

Utility corridor restrictions

Sightline & safety concerns at road crossings

With those constraints, they ruled out Corridor 1 and Corridor 3 for consideration. A pathway through Corridor 2, however, can feasibly be built and would provide significant connectivity between several neighbourhoods.

What’s possible

Click for larger size

The report identifies two phases to the project, using existing pathways and creating new pathways through the hydro corridor.

Phase 1:

Create a continuous pathway from Stittsville Main Street to Fringewood drive, using existing and new pathways.

The existing pathways are in Amberlakes, Amberwood, Forest Creek, and Fringewood, as well as the sidewalk along Springbrook.

A new pathway could run through the hydro corridor from Amberlakes to Springbrook.

The pathways would be built or upgraded as 3.0-metre stone dust gravel pathways, to meet current accessibility requirements.

The project would include a pedestrian crosswalk on Springbrook adjacent to the Amberwood Village Golf & Recreation facility, and an upgrade to the sidewalk along Springbrook between the golf course and the mailboxes.

Cost estimate ranges from $1,258,000 (low) to $2,935,000 (high)

Phase 2:

Create a new pathway connecting through the hydro corridor from Springbrook to Savage, providing a more direct east-west route.

Property ownership constraints and community gardens in this part of the hydro corridor would require additional study and consultation.

Cost estimate $762,000 (low) $1,777,000 (high)

Next steps

This project is still in the very early stages, and does not have funding or approval to proceed.

The immediate next step is securing funding for a functional design (about $30,000) to build on the feasibility study. A completed functional design would also allow the city to apply for grants for the project, should they become available.

The project would also have to be evaluated as part of the City’s priority list for new cycling and pedestrian projects. Unfortunately, the results of the feasibility study came too late to be a part of the 2025 Transportation Master Plan (TMP) passed at Council in July, but it will be reviewed as part of the next TMP update two years from now.

As this project progresses, there will be opportunities for informal and formal consultation with residents and property owners. The Amberwood Village Residents Association have provided feedback as part of the feasibility study, given that the new pathway passes through part of the golf course.

From a broader perspective, this pathway would connect several neighbourhoods to an existing north-south corridor that extends south to the Trans Canada Trail, and north to Maple Grove Road. In the future, this route will extend north to Culdaff in the Connections neighbourhood, and further south towards Flewellyn Road. (See map below.)

I would also like to hear from residents. Do you have any questions or feedback about the project? Click here to contact me.

This route exists today and includes a mix of pathways and residential streets. In the future it will extend further north to Culdaff Road in the Connections neighbourhood, and further south towards Flewellyn. 3) Maple Grove Road corridor, running east west. Eventually, safer pathway connections will be built from Rothbourne Road in the west to east of Terry Fox Drive, potentially as far as Eagleson Road. 4) The Poole Creek Pathway extension through the hydro corridor, described in this post.

un premier à environ 85 m au nord de la promenade Harry-Douglas;

(This is the latest in a series of stories about people in Stittsville who make a difference in our community. If you have a suggestion for a person or organization that we should profile, please contact us!

Poole Creek stretches and meanders from one end of the community to the other, surrounded by majestic trees that stand sturdy on watch over our neighbourhoods. For Bruce Dudley, the stewardship of our lands is a passion that runs deeper than the wetlands and stretches farther than our community borders.

“I have been passionate about the environment my entire life,” says Bruce, a 24-year resident of Stittsville. “Growing up, I spent a lot of time in nature and developed a passion for protecting our native species.”

Bruce recently retired from the Delphi Group where he held the post of Senior Vice President. In his most recent role, he provided high level strategic advice to corporations on sustainability and climate change to effect change in corporate and public behaviour. He is currently the CEO and founder of Your Forest Canada.

Bruce lives his passion beyond the corporate environment and pours hours and effort into the Stittsville Community. This year will mark three clean up missions of Poole Creek. And we are not just talking about garbage pick-up. Dressed in hip waiters and determination, Bruce organizes a crew of volunteers to undertake clean up efforts along the creek on an annual basis. He works closely with Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority and the Ottawa River Keepers to ensure the health of the delegate ecosystem.

Bruce has also led the charge in advocating for mini-forests, woodland clean-ups, and has worked closely with Nature Metrics, the local conservation authorities, and Network of Nature to bring education on biodiversity to our community. He has collaborated with local schools to involve students in firsthand data collection along Poole Creek. (Did you know: Poole Creek is home to more than thirty species of fish.) Most recently, he is teaming up with the Friends of the Wetlands to help in conservation efforts, and the restoration of ecological significant woodlots in the community.

“If you want to be involved in real change, stay connected to the community. Be aware of what is happening and join volunteer efforts,” says Bruce. “We live in a great community, with engaged citizens. Real, positive impact is possible.”

CHANGER LES CHOSES : Bruce Dudley

The City of Ottawa is conducting a traffic calming study along Sweetnam Drive between Harry Douglas and Poole Creek, in response to traffic concerns raised by the residents. The purpose of this study is to recommend permanent roadway modifications intended to improve safety for all road users, primarily by reducing vehicular speeds.

Based on traffic data, coordination with various stakeholders, and project constraints, the City has proposed the following conceptual plan. It includes a pedestrian crosswalk (PXO) to connect pathways on either side of the road and speed humps to reduce traffic speed.

Sweetnam Drive – Proposed traffic calming concept plan

We encourage you to share your feedback on the draft recommendations by filling out the short online survey on the project webpage. You can fill out the online survey until August 9, 2024.

When study recommendations have been finalized and funding secured, the approved traffic calming plan would proceed to design and construction. The entire process from study initiation to final construction can take approximately 2.5 to 4 years to complete. Click here for more information…

City staff have published a draft of the new Public Realm Plan for Stittsville Main Street. The plan covers the public right-of-way (roads, sidewalks and boulevards) from Hazeldean Road to Bobcat Way, and introduces sidewalks and separate bike paths for the full length of the street. There are also proposed upgrades to intersections to improve safety and flow of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Besides transportation, the plan also recommends enhancements to street lighting, benches, street trees, waste receptacles, and greenspace. The plan will give a blueprint to guide future improvements and growth along the street.

The plan was prepared with input of the Stittsville Main Street Public Working Group and Technical Advisory Committee, as well as feedback received from residents including at a public meeting held on April 27. City staff will continue to collect your feedback for the next few weeks, before presenting an updated plan to City Council for approval in June. Thanks to everyone who has shared feedback and questions and contributed so far!

Here’s how you can see the plan and share your feedback:

Potential Public Realm Investments
The current state of the underground infrastructure beneath Stittsville Main Street does not warrant an integrated road, water and sewer reconstruction project in the near future. Ideally, this would be the easiest way to implement the Public Realm Plan all at once. Instead, the plan supports an incremental approach to its implementation. The following are specific Public Realm Investments that can achieve the objectives of the plan over time, as funding becomes available (in no particular order):

North and South Gateway Landscaping & Signage Enhancements

Street Tree Plantings and Greening Initiatives

Street Beautification and Furnishings Upgrades

Active Transportation Improvements and Protected Intersections (pedestrians, cyclists, etc.)

Priority Bus Stops

Poole Creek Trail and Crossing Enhancements

Abbott Street and TransCanada Trail Crossing Improvements

Decorative Lighting Display Installations

Pedestrian Street Light Upgrades – The installation of new street lights in the Village Core (between Wintergreen Drive and Brae Crescent) has the potential to be the first component of this plan to be implemented. A conceptual mock-up of the new fixtures is currently in development and aims be posted on this website in spring 2022.

amélioration de l’aménagement paysager et de la signalisation des points d’accès nord et sud;

(Lisez l’avis ici.)

Flood warning – Severe flooding expected across the Mississippi Valley Watershed; Carp River has peaked and is beginning to drop

April 17, 2019 —

The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority is issuing an update to the FLOOD WARNING for the entire MISSISSIPPI RIVER watershed issued April 20, 2019. A band of rain hit the western portion of the watershed last night with rainfall amounts in excess of 30 mm. Water levels in those areas rose dramatically overnight and continue to increase at this time. Severe flood levels are expected be reached at numerous locations:

Mazinaw Lake / Little Marble and Marble Lakes– levels increased by approximately 30 cm overnight and are expected to increase another 5 to 10 cm over the next 24 hours. Confidence in the overall increase amounts in that area is low due to the uncertainty of the total amounts of rainfall received. Outflows from Mazinaw Lake increased sharply overnight and severe flooding is expected or occurring on Little Marble and Marble Lakes. Water levels are expected to peak tomorrow and begin dropping by mid-week. Areas downstream of these lakes will see levels and flows pick up quickly over the next 48 hours.

Crotch Lake to High Falls – flows out of Crotch Lake are expected to continue to steadily increase over the next 48 hours and will then pick up quickly as the water from the upper lakes reach Crotch lake. Flows in Antoinne and Cranberry Creeks should begin to drop today so levels in the Snow Road area should be stable for the next 48 hours. They are expected to increase again as the water from the upper sub-basins reaches this area.

Dalhousie Lake – over the next 24 hours levels are expected to increase 5 to 10 cm from this morning’s elevation of 157.77 m, matching levels reached in 2017 and 1998. Levels should remain stable until Tuesday.

Mississippi Lake – levels increasing 10 – 15 cm above today’s current elevation of 135.47 m. Levels are expected to be close to those experienced in 1998. Peak levels are expected to be reached Tuesday or Wednesday of next week and will remain at or near those levels over the next 5 days. Increased flows from the upper portion of the watershed should be matched by the anticipated drop in flows from the Clyde and Fall River watersheds.

Mississippi River downstream of Mississippi Lake – flows are expected to continue to increase throughout the weekend. Elevations will vary due to the topography of the shoreline of the river. All residents along the river should keep a close watch on levels and take necessary precautions to protect their property.

Clyde and Fall Rivers – flows are still increasing but are expected to peak later today or early tomorrow They will remain high for the next few days.

Indian and Carp Rivers – flows on the Indian and Carp Rivers have peaked and are beginning to drop. Flows are expected to be below flood stage by the middle of the week. The FLOOD WARNING is terminated for these rivers.

Parents are encouraged to remind their children about hypothermia and the dangers of playing on or near ice covered surfaces or fast flowing water in ditches and smaller creeks. They are also reminded to keep their pets away from the same areas. Residents are strongly urged to stay off all ice covered waterways.

Residents in flood prone or low lying areas, historically susceptible to flooding, should take the necessary precautions to protect their property, such as:

Ensuring sump pump is clear, in good working condition and has a backwater valve on it

Portable backup generator and/or battery pump

Ensuring downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 m from the dwelling

Removing or securing items that might float away as flows increase

Removing valuable items from basements or lower floors that could be subject to flooding

Keep emergency phone numbers handy

Familiarize yourself with your municipality’s emergency preparedness plan

Note: MVCA does not supply sand or sandbags. Residents should check with their local municipality to determine if supplies are provided or where they can be purchased.

Daily water levels and flows are available on the MVCA website at www.mvc.on.ca. Updates to the watershed conditions will be issued as required.

This FLOOD WARNING is in effect until April 23, 2019 and will be updated at that time unless the forecast or conditions change.

The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority flood forecasting and warning program staff monitors weather conditions, snowpack water content, operatesdams to help mitigate flooding, estimates expected river flows and water levels and issues flood advisories or warnings as required. MVCA provides early warning and continuous monitoring to municipal and provincial emergency response personnel through a flood event.
