La version française suit

Over the past few years we’ve made some big strides forward to advance improvements on Stittsville Main Street. In 2020 we published a discussion paper called Revitalizing Stittsville Main Street . Hundreds of residents, businesses, and community groups provided comments through workshops, surveys, and email, summarized in this “What we heard” report.

That led to the development of the Stittsville Main Street Public Realm Plan, approved by City Council in 2022. It’s a reconstruction of the street to modern standards, and the first major upgrade since the early 1990s. Highlights from the plan include:

Wider sidewalks

Bike lanes (cycletracks) on both sides of the street

Raised and protected intersections

Street tree planting and greening

Crossing improvements at the Trans Canada Trail and Poole Creek

Street furnishings, gateway, and placemaking opportunities

Improved bus stops with space for shelters

Renewed street and pedestrian-level lighting

The Stittsville Main Street upgrades were included in the new Transportation Master Plan, approved by City Council in July 2025. That means the project will be prioritized for funding and construction in the next few years. Total cost of the project in 2022 was estimated at just under $23-million.

In the meantime, we’re continuing to work with residents, businesses, landowners, and community groups to revitalize the street through new development and beautification efforts such as the flower pot pilot program, new street furnishing, public art, and more.

Élargissement des trottoirs;

Pistes cyclables des deux côtés de la rue;

Aménagement d’intersections surélevées et protégées;

Plantation d’arbres et aménagement d’espaces verts le long de la rue;

Amélioration des passages aux intersections du Sentier transcanadien et du sentier du ruisseau Poole;

Mobilier urbain, passerelle et possibilités d’aménagement de l’espace;

Amélioration des arrêts d’autobus grâce à des abris;

UPDATE 2022-06-23: Planning Committee unanimously approved the plan. It will go to City Council on Wednesday, July 6

After months of work and consultation, the Stittsville Main Street Public Realm Plan is headed to Planning Committee for approval on June 23, 2022.

The plan provides direction for the rejuvenation of everything within the City’s right-of-way between Hazeldean Road and Bobcat Way—from the street and sidewalks to lighting and benches. It complements the existing Stittsville Main Street Community Design Plan and Secondary Plan, which focus on the privately-owned elements of the street.

There has been extensive public consultation to develop this plan over the last couple years, beginning with the Revitalizing Stittsville Main Street discussion paper we published in January 2020. Hundreds of residents and representatives from community groups, institutions, and business participated in several working group meetings, public information sessions, surveys, and have sent their comments in through email. The feedback gathered directly influenced the new designs.

The proposed changes to the street through the new plan aim to improve the experience for all road users of the transportation corridor and support beautification of the street as a destination. Aspects of the plan include:

Widened sidewalks

Separated cycling facilities (2-meter wide cycletracks on each side of the street)

Raised and protected intersections

Street tree planting and greening

Crossing improvements at the TransCanada Trail and Poole Creek

Street furnishings

Improved bus stops with space for shelters

Renewed street and pedestrian-level lighting

The total cost for construction is estimated to be $22.66 million, though that is not currently funded. Implementation of the plan will be incremental: proposed upgrades to the street and replacements of elements within the public realm can be made as property redevelopment occurs or when specific funding becomes available. Staff will identify implementation funding through future capital budgets, partner government grants, and implementation through other City programs related to street furnishings, greening, or transportation and safety.

If approved by Planning Committee, the plan will go to Council on July 6 for final approval.

Élargissement des trottoirs;

Installation de pistes cyclables distinctes (pistes de deux mètres de large de chaque côté de la rue);

Aménagement d’intersections surélevées et protégées;

Plantation d’arbres et aménagement d’espaces verts le long de la rue;

Amélioration des passages aux intersections du Sentier transcanadien et du sentier du ruisseau Poole;

Mobilier urbain;

Amélioration des arrêts d’autobus grâce à des abris;

City staff have published a draft of the new Public Realm Plan for Stittsville Main Street. The plan covers the public right-of-way (roads, sidewalks and boulevards) from Hazeldean Road to Bobcat Way, and introduces sidewalks and separate bike paths for the full length of the street. There are also proposed upgrades to intersections to improve safety and flow of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Besides transportation, the plan also recommends enhancements to street lighting, benches, street trees, waste receptacles, and greenspace. The plan will give a blueprint to guide future improvements and growth along the street.

The plan was prepared with input of the Stittsville Main Street Public Working Group and Technical Advisory Committee, as well as feedback received from residents including at a public meeting held on April 27. City staff will continue to collect your feedback for the next few weeks, before presenting an updated plan to City Council for approval in June. Thanks to everyone who has shared feedback and questions and contributed so far!

Here’s how you can see the plan and share your feedback:

Potential Public Realm Investments
The current state of the underground infrastructure beneath Stittsville Main Street does not warrant an integrated road, water and sewer reconstruction project in the near future. Ideally, this would be the easiest way to implement the Public Realm Plan all at once. Instead, the plan supports an incremental approach to its implementation. The following are specific Public Realm Investments that can achieve the objectives of the plan over time, as funding becomes available (in no particular order):

North and South Gateway Landscaping & Signage Enhancements

Street Tree Plantings and Greening Initiatives

Street Beautification and Furnishings Upgrades

Active Transportation Improvements and Protected Intersections (pedestrians, cyclists, etc.)

Priority Bus Stops

Poole Creek Trail and Crossing Enhancements

Abbott Street and TransCanada Trail Crossing Improvements

Decorative Lighting Display Installations

Pedestrian Street Light Upgrades – The installation of new street lights in the Village Core (between Wintergreen Drive and Brae Crescent) has the potential to be the first component of this plan to be implemented. A conceptual mock-up of the new fixtures is currently in development and aims be posted on this website in spring 2022.

amélioration de l’aménagement paysager et de la signalisation des points d’accès nord et sud;

plantation d’arbres de rue et initiatives d’écologisation;

amélioration de l’embellissement et du mobilier de rue;

amélioration du transport actif et des intersections protégées (piétons, cyclistes, etc.);

arrêts d’autobus prioritaires;

amélioration du sentier et du passage du ruisseau Poole;

amélioration de la rue Abbott et du passage du sentier transcanadien;

installation de dispositifs d’éclairage décoratif;

The City is developing a new Public Realm Plan for Stittsville Main Street from Hazeldean Road to Bobcat Way that will help inform the street’s revitalization.

A Public Realm Plan will guide any future upgrades, replacements and new elements in the public street. This includes sidewalks, cycling facilities, streetlights, traffic lanes, benches, street trees, waste receptacles etc. The plan is an important first step in the planning process for any future work.

This work includes a supporting transportation study and street design that will identify opportunities for both short and long-term reconstruction activities on the street with the goal of increasing space for accessibility, pedestrian use, cycling, streetscaping, enhanced lighting and greening.

At this meeting, we’ll review the work done on the plan so far, and you’ll have a chance to provide feedback on the draft plan.

La version française suit

The City of Ottawa is creating a new plan to guide the renewal all public features of Stittsville Main Street—that’s everything from benches and streetlights to sidewalks and traffic lanes. The goal is to make the street more beautiful, inviting, safe, and functional for all visitors and road users. We want to hear your ideas to make the Public Realm Plan, along with Main Street itself, as good as it can be.

By visiting Engage Ottawa, you can reach out to the project managers with your feedback (feel free to copy Councillor Glen), stay up-to-date on the project’s progress, and subscribe to receive updates delivered right to your mailbox. The public engagement will also involve a virtual workshop open to all residents (stay tuned for date and time) as well as consultation with a working group consisting of the Stittsville Business Association, Stittsville Village Association, and the Stittsville Main Street Steering Committee.

Stittsville Main Street was last reconstructed 30 years ago, and so many elements of the street are either reaching the end of their lifespan or not up to modern standards. Developing a Public Realm Plan is important to guide future work to renew the street.

The work on this plan extends from our “Revitalizing Stittsville Main Street” project, which was designed to further discussion, generate ideas, and identify stakeholders and volunteers to participate in future planning and advocacy.

The Public Realm Plan process will study:

Pedestrians and cyclists

Landscaping and Public Space Opportunities

Street Furniture and Lighting

Existing and Planned Context

Vehicle circulations and volumes

Street intersections

Below and above grade utilities and services

Previous Urban Planning work completed for the study area (Stittsville Main Street Secondary Plan and the Stittsville Main Street Community Design Plan).

Private approaches, parking and loading

The data will inform the new requirements and designs of sidewalks, cycling facilities, public spaces, street furniture, street lighting, landscaping and other details as identified.

This project is scheduled to be delivered in four phases:

Phase 1: Project Launch (September 2021)

Phase 2: Existing Conditions and Transportation Study

Phase 3: Identification and Evaluation of Alternatives

Phase 4: Recommended Public Realm Plan (early 2022)
