Owner and chef Reggie Olson officially opened Scratch Box Gastro Food Truck on Stittsville Main Street in December 2021, which was pretty brave considering the economy was still recovering from COVID-19 restrictions. However, since opening, the business has quickly gained popularity, in part due to the great food, but also due to Olson’s commitment to give back to the community.

Olson is a regular supporter of Operation Come Home, an organization close to his heart that prevents youth from becoming homeless adults through their education, employment and support. In addition to working closely with Operation Come Home, Chef Reggie has lent a helping hand to residents in Stittsville many times.

In addition to offering food after the 2022 derecho left many without power, he also stepped up to help other food trucks that were broken into, even though his truck was also a target. Reggie has quietly helped by providing meals to families and individuals, knowing their budget is tight or they have very little money.

“We are a community and family first, business second,” says Reggie. “Giving is just giving.”

Watching him at the truck window, he is on a first-name basis with many of his customers and knows about the latest buzz in the neighbourhood. He can often be found around town, lending his talents as a guest judge at events, helping with parades and other community events. He also offers young people an opportunity to learn in his kitchen.

“It is not just a job opportunity when they come to work,” says Chef Reggie. “It is a chance for them to learn how to make healthy food from scratch on a budget. I watch them to learn and grow, eventually moving on to their own opportunity.”

He’s made it a mission to provide all food made from scratch with the best ingredients. Even the mayo is made from scratch. He also makes a point of providing everything with a gluten-free option that doesn’t compromise taste.

“I want to show people that you can make good food that tastes great, with healthy ingredients, that is actually affordable,” says Chef Reggie.

Le propriétaire et chef Reggie Olson a officiellement ouvert le Scratch Box Gastro Food Truck sur la rue principale de Stittsville en décembre 2021, ce qui était plutôt courageux compte tenu du fait que l’économie ne s’était pas encore remise des restrictions imposées par la COVID-19. Cependant, depuis son ouverture, l’entreprise a rapidement gagné en popularité, en partie grâce à la qualité de ses plats, mais aussi grâce à l’engagement de Reggie Olson à redonner à la communauté.

Olson soutient régulièrement « Opération rentrer au foyer », un organisme qui lui tient à cœur et qui empêche les jeunes de devenir des adultes sans abri par l’éducation, l’emploi et le soutien qu’ils reçoivent. En plus de travailler en étroite collaboration avec « Opération rentrer au foyer », le chef a prêté main-forte aux résidents de Stittsville à de nombreuses reprises.

Outre l’offre de nourriture après que le derecho de 2022 a privé de nombreux foyers d’électricité, il s’est porté au secours d’autres camions de restauration qui avaient été cambriolés, même si le sien avait également été pris pour cible. Discrètement, M. Olson apporte son aide en fournissant des repas à des familles et à des particuliers, sachant que leur budget est serré ou qu’ils n’ont que très peu d’argent.

« D’abord, nous sommes une communauté et une famille. Ensuite, nous sommes une entreprise, a déclaré M. Olson. Donner, ce n’est pas grand-chose. »

En l’observant à la fenêtre du camion, on s’aperçoit qu’il appelle bon nombre de ses clients par leur prénom et qu’il est au courant des derniers potins du quartier. On le trouve souvent en ville, collaborant en tant que juge invité lors d’activités, donnant un coup de main pour les défilés et autres manifestations communautaires. Il permet également aux jeunes d’apprendre dans sa cuisine.

« Lorsqu’ils viennent travailler, ce n’est pas simplement une possibilité d’emploi, a expliqué le chef Olson. C’est l’occasion pour eux d’apprendre à préparer des aliments sains à partir de rien, avec un petit budget. Je les regarde apprendre et se perfectionner, pour finalement suivre leur propre chemin. »

Olson s’est donné pour mission de préparer tous ses plats de A à Z avec les meilleurs ingrédients. Même la mayonnaise est fabriquée à partir de zéro. Il met également un point d’honneur à tout proposer avec une option sans gluten qui ne compromet pas la saveur.

« Je veux montrer aux gens qu’il est possible de faire de la bonne cuisine, qui a bon goût, avec des ingrédients sains et à un prix abordable », a indiqué le chef Olson.
