La version française suit

Last fall, the Ontario Government banned the use of Automated Speed Enforcement (speed cameras) anywhere in the province, including school zones.

As a replacement, they’ve created a new “Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF)” with $210-million for municipalities to increase road safety in school zones and community safety zones where cameras were previously located. Cities can apply to use this funding for things like speed bumps, raised crosswalks, roundabouts, and signage.

Ottawa has applied for funding to pay for safety infrastructure in several school zones across Ottawa.

St. Stephen Catholic School (Stittsville Main Street in Jackson Trails)
Four sets of speed cushions on Stittsville Main Street Horseshoe Crescent and Hazeldean Road – see map below. (Speed cushions are a type of speed bumps that slow down most vehicles but allow larger vehicles like fire trucks to pass through without slowing.)
A PXO (pedestrian crosswalk) at Stittsville Main and Bandelier

Sacred Heart High School (Abbott Street)
Four sets of speed cushions on Abbott Street, between Amy Street and Carbery Drive – see map below. (Speed cushions are a type of speed bumps that slow down most vehicles but allow larger vehicles like fire trucks to pass through without slowing.)

Holy Spirit School (Stittsville Main Street)
Thermoplastic pavement markings, speed display boards in both directions, and flashing beacons in both directions.

École Paul-Desmarais (Abbott Street)
Thermoplastic pavement markings, speed display boards in both directions, and flashing beacons in both directions.

École Saint-Jean-Paul II (Abbott Street)
Upgrade of the pedestrian crossing at Abbott & Tall Tree to a raised crossing.

These locations are approximate and may be adjusted slightly if impacts are identified during the detailed design stage. Other site-specific constraints identified during detailed design may also affect the feasibility of the proposed measures. Timing of installation depends on when the provincial government approves Ottawa’s request for funding.

We’d love to hear from you on this. Please contact our office with your feedback and questions. We’ll summarize any feedback received and share it with the City’s traffic staff.

Please note:

Schools that did not have a speed cameras are not eligible for RSIF funding. However, there are temporary traffic calming measures planned for other locations this year, including speed display boards along Cope Drive at Shingwàkons Public School, St. Bernadette Catholic School, and Maplewood Secondary School.

Sacred Heart High School (rue Abbott)

The Parachute Program has awarded St. Stephen School with $10,000 for traffic calming and safety measures. Founded in 2012, Parachute is a National Charity dedicated to injury prevention. The money will help fund a number of measures on streets near the school in Jackson Trails.

Our City’s Traffic Safety team proposed a temporary island at Kimpton and Overland and we plan to reduce the posted speed on Kimpton to 40 km/h. Staff have also added a speed board, parking restrictions and conducted sign repairs. The city will also install flex stakes in the coming coming weeks on several streets.

These measures are on a pilot basis, and our office will be collecting feedback from residents throughout the fall. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about these plans. Please slow down, obey the road, and report unsafe driving conditions to www.ottawapolice.ca/report.

Did you know pedestrians have a 90 per cent chance of surviving a crash at 30 km/h or less but only have a 50 per cent chance at higher speeds? Did you know a pedestrian struck at 64 km/h has an 80 per cent chance of dying? And, did you know approximately 27 per cent of fatal traffic accidents in Canada is from speeding?

Statistics show reducing speed by as little as 5 to 10 km/h saves lives. In Canada, economic losses caused by traffic collision-related health care costs and lost productivity are at least $10 billion annually. This number represents approximately one per cent of Canada’s GDP.

In Ottawa, speeding takes the top spot for infractions, with almost 10,000 tickets handed out to drivers in 2019. Police say driving even 10 kilometres over the speed limit can mean the difference between surviving and not for all parties involved

There are several streets throughout Stittsville identified as problem areas when it comes to disregarding posted traffic signs. Stittsville Main near St. Stephen School is one such area.

Our team has been working with community leaders, residents, the school, the city’s traffic safety team, and the Parachute Program to implement temporary traffic calming measures to create safer streets for everyone.
