On Wednesday, City Council unanimously approved a motion I had introduced for a commemorative naming to honour the late Tysen Lefebvre.

Tysen was an extraordinary young man whose courage and generosity inspired our entire community. Despite living with Pfeiffer syndrome and undergoing more than 20 surgeries, he dedicated his life to helping others, raising over $1 million for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tysen passed away earlier this year at the age of 25 years old.

His remarkable courage and determination earned him numerous awards, including Stittsville Youth Citizen of the Year, the Mayor’s City Builder Award, and the Ontario Junior Citizen Award. Tysen’s kindness and spirit touched countless lives.

With the motion approved, a new street in a future Stittsville neighbourhood (location to be determined) will feature his name to recognize Tysen’s many accomplishments and the positive impact he had on our community.

My motion

WHEREAS in 2024, City Council approved the Commemorative Naming Policy; and

WHEREAS in keeping with its powers set out in the Municipal Act, 2001, Council may assign a commemorative name by resolution, notwithstanding the provisions included in the Commemorative Naming Policy; and

WHEREAS Addressing By-law No. 2014-78 provides the regulatory framework for municipal addressing within the City of Ottawa; and

WHEREAS the By-law stipulates that no private road or highway shall be shown on City mapping or listed in the Index of Streets unless its name, street type designation, and associated generic terms have been approved by the Chief Building Official or by Council; and

WHEREAS Tysen Lefebvre was a philanthropist and community hero who was born with a rare genetic disease called Pfeiffer Syndrome Type 2; and

WHEREAS Tysen Lefebvre dedicated his life to helping others, raising over $1 million for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; and

WHEREAS Tysen Lefebvre passed away earlier this year at the age of 25 and is remembered for his remarkable courage and determination which earned him numerous awards including Stittsville Youth Citizen of the Year, the Mayor’s City Builder Award, and the Ontario Junior Citizen Award;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the name “Tysen Lefebvre” be approved as a future commemorative street name in Ward 6, Stittsville; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the name “Tysen Lefebvre” be added to the list of available commemorative street names in designated wards on ottawa.ca; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that costs related to the street naming, including blade signs and post, will be funded as part of the future request submitted by a residential home developer; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any costs related with a subsequent unveiling will be funded through the Councillor’s office.

Mercredi, le Conseil municipal a approuvé à l’unanimité une motion que j’avais déposée en vue d’une dénomination commémorative en l’honneur de feu Tysen Lefebvre.

Le courage et la générosité de ce jeune homme extraordinaire ont été une source d’inspiration pour toute notre communauté. Malgré son syndrome de Pfeiffer et ses 20 chirurgies, Tysen a passé sa vie à aider les autres : il a recueilli plus d’un million de dollars pour la fondation Rêves d’enfants. Tysen est décédé dans la dernière année à l’âge de 25 ans.

Son courage et sa détermination remarquables lui ont valu de nombreuses distinctions, dont le prix Jeune de l’année de Stittsville, le Prix de bâtisseur de la Ville décerné par le maire et l’Ontario Junior Citizen Award. La gentillesse et la bonne humeur du jeune homme ont marqué d’innombrables vies.

La motion permettra de donner son nom à une rue d’un futur quartier de Stittsville (emplacement à déterminer) pour rendre hommage à ses nombreuses réalisations et à son influence positive dans notre communauté.

ATTENDU QUE le Conseil municipal a approuvé la Politique sur les noms commémoratifs en 2024; et

ATTENDU QUE, conformément aux pouvoirs qui lui sont conférés dans la Loi de 2001 sur les municipalités, le Conseil municipal peut attribuer un nom commémoratif par résolution, sans égard à la Politique; et

ATTENDU QUE le Règlement n^o 2014-78 fournit le cadre réglementaire sur l’adressage municipal à Ottawa; et

ATTENDU QUE, selon le Règlement, une voie publique ou privée ne peut figurer dans la cartographie de la ville d’Ottawa ou dans le Répertoire des rues que si son nom, la désignation du type de rue et les termes génériques connexes ont été approuvés par le chef du service du bâtiment ou le Conseil; et

ATTENDU QUE Tysen Lefebvre était un philanthrope et un héros de la communauté né avec le syndrome de Pfeiffer de type 2, une maladie génétique rare; et

ATTENDU QUE M. Lefebvre a passé sa vie à aider les autres, notamment en recueillant plus d’un million de dollars pour la fondation Rêves d’enfants; et

IL EST EN OUTRE RÉSOLU QUE les coûts liés à la désignation de la rue, entre autres pour les enseignes à lamelles et les poteaux, soient financés dans le cadre de la demande qui sera soumise par un promoteur résidentiel;

IL EST EN OUTRE RÉSOLU QUE tous les coûts liés à un éventuel dévoilement soient couverts par le bureau du conseiller du quartier.

I will be introducing a notice of motion on Wednesday at City Council for a commemorative naming to honour the late Marion Gullock.

Marion lived in Stittsville for close to 68 years and played a vital role in the formation of many of our local groups and activities that have helped shape our community. She received the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year Award in 2000 and the City of Ottawa’s Community Activism Award in 2003 for her dedicated volunteerism in Stittsville.

Marion and her husband Bill were one of the first families to move to Ralphpark Street, formerly known as Ralph Street, and Marion lived in the same house for several decades becoming a pillar of the community and known for her kindness, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand. She passed away earlier this year.

If approved, Ralph Street Park, located at 12 Ralphpark Street, would be renamed “Marion Gullock Park” in recognition of her outstanding service and enduring impact on the community.

WHEREAS Marion was awarded the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year Award in 2000 and Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 2002 and 2012, as well as the City of Ottawa’s Community Activism Award in 2003 for her dedicated volunteerism in Stittsville; and

WHEREAS Marion and her husband Bill were one of the first families to move to Ralphpark Street, previously known as Ralph Street, and Marion lived in the same house for several decades, becoming a pillar of the community known for her kindness, generosity, and willingness to lend a helping hand;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all costs related to updating the park sign be funded through Ward 6 – Stittsville Cash-in-Lieu; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all text for signage and commemorative plaques shall be bilingual and subject to approval by the General Manager of Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services.

Wednesday morning at City Council I will be introducing a notice of motion for a commemorative naming to honour John Curry and John Brummell.

John Curry was the long-time editor and publisher of the Stittsville News, as well as an avid local historian and author. He also served as a Catholic school board trustee for over 20 years. John Brummell worked for decades as a writer and photographer for the Stittsville News and was involved in many volunteer organizations in the community.

If approved, the new park at 785 Cope Drive would be renamed “Brummell-Curry Park”, in honour of their outstanding service and enduring impact on the community of Stittsville and the City of Ottawa.

Text of my notice of motion

WHEREAS on July 10, 2024, City Council approved the Commemorative Naming Policy; and

WHEREAS in keeping with its powers set out in the Municipal Act, 2001, Council may assign a commemorative name by resolution, notwithstanding the provisions included in the Commemorative Naming Policy; and

WHEREAS John Curry lived in Stittsville for over 40 years and served as the long-time editor, writer and publisher of the Stittsville News, as well as an avid local historian and author; and

WHEREAS John Curry was a dedicated school board trustee for over 20 years and received the provincial Award of Merit in 2018 from the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association; and

WHEREAS John Curry was a founding member of the Goulbourn Museum, the first Chair of the Holy Spirit Parish Council and a member of the Knights of Columbus, as well as an honourary member of the Stittsville Rotary Club and the Stittsville District Lions Club; and

WHEREAS John Brummell lived in Stittsville for almost 45 years and worked for decades as a writer and photographer for the Stittsville News; and

WHEREAS John Brummell received the Mayor’s City Builder Award in 2017 for his work at the Stittsville News, as well as his involvement in the community; and

WHEREAS John Brummell was Director of the Richmond Fair Board, a member of the Goulbourn Township Historical Society, the Stittsville District Lions Club, and the Goulbourn Horticultural Society, as well as integral in establishing the Stittsville Rotary Club where he remained an affiliate member; and

WHEREAS John Brummell and John Curry were known throughout the community as “the two Johns” who were long-time best friends for 40 years and worked side by side at the Stittsville News and worked tirelessly to document the community and tell the stories of people living in Stittsville and Goulbourn;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council approve the commemorative naming of Cope Park, located at 785 Cope Drive, to “Brummell-Curry Park” in honour of John Brummell and John Curry, in recognition of their outstanding service and enduring impact on the community of Stittsville and the City of Ottawa; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that an appropriate stand and plaque be installed displaying the name and a brief history of the contributions of John Brummell and John Curry; and

I will miss John greatly. He was a dedicated contributor in our community, both in his role as a journalist as well as through his many volunteer pursuits over the years.  John Brummell and his friend John Curry were everywhere with the Stittsville News, attending community association meetings, local hockey games, school graduations, neighbourhood picnics and music recitals.

What I’ll remember most about John is his friendly spirit that put everyone around him at ease. He brought so much joy to his work, which was reflected in the genuine smiles from the people he photographed. My condolences to John’s family and his many friends in the community.

John me manquera beaucoup. Il était un collaborateur dévoué de notre communauté, aussi bien par son travail de journaliste que par ses nombreuses activités bénévoles au fil des ans. John Brummell et son ami John Curry étaient partout avec le Stittsville News : aux réunions des associations communautaires, aux matchs de hockey locaux, aux cérémonies de remise des diplômes, aux pique‑niques de quartier et aux festivals de musique.

Ce dont je me souviendrai le plus de John, c’est son esprit de camaraderie qui mettait tout le monde à l’aise autour de lui. Son métier le comblait de bonheur, ce qui se reflétait dans les sourires sincères des personnes qu’il prenait en photo. Je présente mes condoléances à sa famille et à ses nombreux amis dans la communauté.
