Carleton University is conducting a research study in several wards across Ottawa to assess the benefits of urban greening initiatives, by surveying bird and insect populations in forested areas. As part of the study, researchers will deploy a non-lethal moth trap at Ladybirds Park (65 Sirocco Crescent) in the Timbermere neighbourhood, between August 7-17 and September 5-15, 2026.

The traps will be set at dusk and collected shortly after dawn, outside of the parks’ general operating hours. They will be placed within forested areas and are not expected to disrupt residents. Informational signs will be installed beside each trap, including a brief description of the study and a QR code that links to more information.

The traps are completely non-lethal. Moths remain alive throughout the process and are gently released after identification and data collection. No vegetation, infrastructure, or public access areas will be disturbed.

Each trap consists of:

• A 20 W UV black light
• A funnel and bucket collection chamber
• Egg cartons that provide resting surfaces for the moths
• A battery
• A weather-resistant bilingual label with project contact information

Recherche sur les papillons de nuit au parc Ladybirds

L’Université Carleton mène une étude de recherche dans plusieurs quartiers d’Ottawa afin d’évaluer les avantages des initiatives de verdissement urbain en recensant les populations d’oiseaux et d’insectes dans les zones boisées. Dans le cadre de cette étude, les chercheurs installeront un piège à papillons de nuit non létal au parc Ladybirds (65, croissant Sirocco), dans le quartier Timbermere, du 7 au 17 août et du 5 au 15 septembre 2026.

Les pièges seront installés au crépuscule et récupérés peu après l’aube, en dehors des heures normales d’utilisation du parc. Ils seront placés dans des secteurs boisés et ne devraient pas perturber les résidents. Des panneaux d’information seront installés à côté de chaque piège, comprenant une brève description de l’étude et un code QR menant à des renseignements supplémentaires.

Les pièges sont entièrement non létaux. Les papillons de nuit demeurent vivants tout au long du processus et sont relâchés délicatement après leur identification et la collecte des données. Aucune végétation, infrastructure ou zone d’accès public ne sera perturbée.

Chaque piège comprend :

• Une lampe UV noire de 20 W
• Un entonnoir et une chambre de collecte en seau
• Des cartons à œufs servant de surface de repos pour les papillons de nuit
• Une batterie
• Une étiquette bilingue résistante aux intempéries comprenant les coordonnées du projet

In mid-June, a contractor removed most of the vegetation at Hydro One’s Alexander Distribution Centre at 1888 Maple Grove Road. The trees and vegetation that were removed provided a visual and sound buffer between homes and the hydro station, along with shade and tree canopy for the community.

We met on-site with neighbours on August 5 to provide an update on our conversations with Hydro One, and potential options going forward.

At the meeting, we shared a general background including a summary of meetings and correspondence we’ve received from Hydro One, including:

1. My office has had two virtual meetings with representatives from Hydro One’s Community Relations department, once on June 25 and another on July 10. In both of those meetings, we requested additional context about why the vegetation clearing occurred; we asked for more clarity around their processes for maintenance and communication with residents; we asked Hydro One to meet directly with affected residents to address questions and concerns; and we have advocated for appropriate mitigation measures to address the tree loss, including the planting of new trees in the buffer zone.

2. We also consulted with the City of Ottawa’s forestry department to check if the vegetation and tree clearing violated any city regulations or by-laws.

Hydro One has broad authority under Ontario’s Electricity Act (1998) to manage vegetation around critical infrastructure, including a statutory right to maintain infrastructure and remove obstructions at their discretion. There is no appeal or review process.

The City of Ottawa’s Tree Protection By-Law exempts tree removal that is required for maintenance of a transmission or distribution system.

3. Hydro One provided the following rationale to my office by e-mail:

Technical rationale and safety standards

The specific scope of vegetation management work at Alexander DS was governed by critical operational and safety considerations:

• Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and safety codes: Hydro One is legally required to comply with provincial safety standards to prevent public climbing hazards, fire risks and arc flashing. Encroaching vegetation directly compromises these standards.
• Subsurface and security requirements: This clearance is essential not just for overhead lines, but to protect underground ground wires and mats buried beneath the surface. Furthermore, the perimeter fence line must remain entirely clear of vegetation to ensure it is fully visible for routine security and structural integrity inspections.
• Site-specific hazards: The vegetation removal was also prompted by direct community and Ombudsman complaints regarding thick overgrowth contributing to severe rodent/rat activity affecting neighboring properties. Because the site was heavily overgrown with hazardous wild parsnip and poison ivy, the cleanup could not safely be done by hand, requiring the use of mechanical clearing equipment to safely eliminate the rodent habitats and safety hazards for both the public and field personnel.

 

4. Hydro One has not been willing to participate in a community meeting – virtual or on-site – with residents: “To ensure all resident feedback is properly logged, tracked and addressed individually, we ask that residents continue to be directed to our Customer Relations team at CustomerRelations@HydroOne.com.”

5. Hydro One says they will not plant new trees on the site: “While we have heard from some in the neighborhood who have expressed concerns regarding the work and loss of visual screening, Hydro One will not be planting new trees or vegetation on the station property. Doing so would reintroduce the same safety, operational and pest-control risks that this maintenance was required to eliminate.”

6. In the past week, Hydro One sent this letter to property owners who back onto the facility, which includes an offer for a landscaping voucher for trees, shrubs, or landscaping on private property.

7. Some residents have lodged a formal complaint with the Hydro One ombudsman, who has concluded that “Hydro One did not act unreasonably when it chose to remove the vegetation on the station property and offer compensation in the form of nursery vouchers”.

What’s next?

We made two recommendations to residents:

1. Our office will continue to pursue new tree planting on site as mitigation for the vegetation loss, on behalf of residents.
2. Residents should documenting any property damage to retaining walls, fencing, etc. on individual property due to the maintenance work, and seeking legal advice.

There were also several questions at the meeting that we will follow up on, including:

• Who owns the retaining walls and who is responsible for maintenance?
• Are there any agreements within the subdivision plan, or easement rights, etc. that could apply to the buffer zone around the hydro site.
• What are the requirements for buffer zones and/or mitigation around new electrical stations?
• Can Hydro One be required to build a taller fence as a mitigation measure?

Our office met virtually with Hydro One on Friday morning and they provided the following updates:

• They are not planning any new tree planting on the site.
• They will be contacting neighbouring residents with an information letter and a voucher to purchase trees for their own backyards, as a “goodwill gesture” to mitigate the loss of trees.
• They are not planning to add any additional fencing on the site.
• The remaining trees will continue to be maintained and will not be removed.
• They are not planning to expand the current footprint of the electrical equipment.
• They are asking residents with questions or concerns contact their Customer Relations team directly at CustomerRelations@hydroone.com.

I’m still not satisfied with this response and will continue advocating for trees to be replanted along the edges of the property. I’ve asked Hydro One to provide my office with a copy of the letter to residents and a written summary that we can post to this page. Hydro One is also unwilling to participate in a meeting with residents.

Cette réponse ne me satisfait toujours pas, et je continuerai à militer pour que des arbres soient replantés le long des limites de la propriété. J’ai demandé à Hydro One de fournir à mon bureau une copie de la lettre adressée aux résidentes et aux résidents, ainsi qu’un résumé écrit que nous pourrons publier sur cette page. Hydro One refuse également de participer à une réunion avec les résidentes et les résidents.

• We asked Hydro One to meet directly with affected residents to address their questions and concerns. They have indicated they will follow up with us on this request.
• We also strongly advocated for appropriate mitigation measures to address the tree loss, including the planting of new trees in the buffer zone.

Hydro One has asked that any residents with questions or concerns contact their Customer Relations team directly at CustomerRelations@hydroone.com.

Last week, Hydro One cut down all the vegetation at their power station site on Maple Grove Road in the Fairwinds community, including several mature trees.

There was no notification to residents, and no notification to my office. We contacted Hydro One, who say that the work was to protect critical infrastructure, and there’s no tree permit required. I’ve included their response below.

I understand the need to do maintenance and protect equipment, but why did they have to clear everything? And why wasn’t there advance notification to my office and to neighbours?

We’re continuing to push Hydro One for answers, and for some mitigation to offset the loss of trees, which provided shade and privacy for residents, as well as habitat for wildlife.

Response from Hydro One on June 19

Thank you for reaching out regarding the recent vegetation work near the hydro substation in the Maple Grove Road and Santolina Street area. We appreciate you sharing the concerns raised by residents.

The work in question was carried out on Hydro One–owned property as part of planned vegetation maintenance around the station. This work is required to maintain safe and reliable operation of the facility, ensure clear access to infrastructure, and address vegetation that was encroaching on the station and its perimeter fencing.

In this instance, vegetation was cleared along the full perimeter of the site, including the removal of dead or declining trees and additional growth that was interfering with the station or posed a potential risk to the equipment. While we understand this has resulted in a noticeable change to the surrounding vegetation, the work was necessary to meet our safety, maintenance, and operational requirements.

With respect to notification, this type of routine maintenance work is conducted on Hydro One property and does not typically involve advance notice to adjacent residents. That said, our crews did engage with a number of residents onsite during the work and responded to questions where possible.

We recognize the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with the surrounding community and understand that the removal of vegetation, particularly where it has provided screening, can be concerning. The work is not yet fully complete, and follow-up activities are planned, including site clean-up and restoration measures such as reseeding, which will help improve the overall condition of the area.

We are happy to continue working with your office to address any outstanding questions or concerns from residents. Please reach out if you require any additional information.

La semaine dernière, Hydro One a abattu les arbres et rasé toute la végétation du site de sa centrale électrique sur le chemin Maple Grove dans la communauté de Fairwinds, y compris plusieurs arbres matures.

Aucun avis n’a été envoyé aux résidents, et aucun avis n’a été envoyé à mon bureau. Nous avons communiqué avec Hydro One, qui nous a dit que les travaux visaient à protéger les infrastructures essentielles, et qu’aucun permis d’abattre des arbres n’est requis. J’ai inclus sa réponse ci-dessous.

Je comprends la nécessité de faire de l’entretien et de protéger l’équipement, mais pourquoi ont-ils dû tout enlever? Et pourquoi un préavis n’a-t-il pas été envoyé à mon bureau et aux voisins?

Merci de nous avoir contactés au sujet des récents travaux de coupe de végétation près de la sous-station hydroélectrique dans le secteur du chemin Maple Grove et de la rue Santolina. Nous vous remercions de nous faire part des préoccupations soulevées par les résidents.

Les travaux en question ont été réalisés sur un terrain appartenant à Hydro One dans le cadre de l’entretien planifié de la végétation autour de la centrale. Ces travaux sont nécessaires pour maintenir un fonctionnement sûr et fiable de l’installation, assurer un accès bien dégagé aux infrastructures et retirer la végétation qui envahissait la centrale et sa clôture périphérique.

Dans ce cas, la végétation a été retirée le long du périmètre du site, y compris les arbres morts ou dépérissants et d’autres croissances qui gênaient la centrale ou représentaient un risque pour l’équipement. Bien que nous comprenions que cela a entraîné un changement notable dans la végétation environnante, les travaux étaient nécessaires pour répondre à nos besoins en matière de sécurité, d’entretien et de service.

En ce qui concerne l’avis, ce type de travaux d’entretien de routine est effectué sur la propriété d’Hydro One et n’implique généralement pas de préavis aux résidents adjacents. Cela dit, nos équipes ont échangé avec plusieurs résidents sur place pendant les travaux et ont répondu aux questions dans la mesure du possible.

Summer vacation? What’s that? There is no slowing down for Forestry Services. It’s the busiest time of year for our Foresty Inspectors who have already answered more than 10,000 service requests! We planted 3,335 trees this spring and planning is already well underway for the fall planting season.

Storm Response

While the severe thunderstorms of July 1 will be remembered by many residents for the flooding and damage they experienced in their homes, the storm also created more work for Forestry Services crews. Between July 1 and July 5, we received 755 service requests related to storm impacts. Our teams have been working diligently to respond to these calls as quickly and safely as possible, and as of this morning, we have dealt with all priority items. A very small number of non-urgent SRs, less than 25, have been added to the queue of our regular work.

Growing our canopy

While the wildly successful Plant Your Place! Program spring tree distributions are over for another year, we still encourage residents to help grow our canopy by planting trees on their own property.  When selecting the right tree for the right place, it is important to be mindful of the location of property lines and to contact Ontario One Call so that utility providers can locate where infrastructure is buried on their property. This service, which is free, protects residents from being injured from infrastructure such as gas lines, and protects the utilities that they depend on.

Another way residents can plant trees is through the Tree Dedication Program. As of this month, anyone dedicating a tree for 2027 will be given a larger tag that has room for the year of the dedication, the type of dedication and the name(s) of who the tree is dedicated to. The new and improved tag will be available for all trees included in the fall 2026 and spring 2027 planting seasons. More changes coming in the fall of 2027, pending budget approval.

Tree Inventory

Our tree inventory is a continuous project across the City. We are collecting a wide range of data including tree location and species. This year, our focus is on new subdivisions and our City facilities. An inventory of City-owned trees is an essential tool to manage these valuable assets. It helps us protect and enhance urban and rural forests, maintaining sustainable forests for generations to come.

Tree Check Month

As fate would have it, last year’s Tree Check Month event with our partners at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was scheduled for the only day it rained the entire month of August! But we are not afraid to try it again this year.

This year’s event is set for August 26, from 4pm to 7pm at the Trolley Station at Britannia Park next to the Ron Kolbus Community Centre. The Invasive Species Centre and Canadian Forest Service will also come with presentations and there will short walks scheduled throughout to highlight the research work we and the CFIA are doing in Britannia Park to battle the Asian Long-Horned Beetle.

Whether on your own property or on public land, spotting and reporting invasives right away to the CFIA is the best way to protect our trees. The event on Aug 26 will be a great way to learn more about how to check trees.

How residents can help

With camping season now here, we once again remind residents to please burn firewood in the same local area where it was purchased and not to transport it outside that area. Bringing firewood in from other municipalities can greatly contribute to the spread of many different diseases and pests that negatively impact trees and forests. And more importantly, don’t forget to confirm campfires are allowed!

Des vacances d’été? C’est quoi, ça? Aux Services forestiers, on ne chôme pas! C’est la période la plus occupée de l’année pour nos inspectrices et inspecteurs forestiers, qui ont déjà répondu à plus de 10 000 demandes de service! Nous avons planté 3 335 arbres au printemps, et les préparatifs pour la saison de plantation de l’automne battent déjà leur plein.

Intervention suite à la tempête

Si les violents orages du 1er juillet resteront gravés dans la mémoire de bon nombre de résidentes et résidents en raison des inondations et des dégâts qu’ils ont causés à leur demeure, ils ont également entraîné une charge de travail supplémentaire pour les Services forestiers. Entre le 1er et le 5 juillet, nous avons reçu 755 demandes de service liées aux ravages de la tempête. Nos équipes travaillent sans relâche pour répondre à ces demandes de façon aussi rapide et sécuritaire que possible; ce matin, toutes les situations prioritaires étaient traitées. Un très petit nombre de demandes de service non urgentes (moins de 25) ont été ajoutées à notre programme de travail régulier.

Pour un couvert forestier plus vert

Même si Un arbre chez vous!, le programme printanier de distribution d’arbres qui connaît un succès monstre, est terminé pour cette année, nous continuons d’encourager les résidentes et résidents à enrichir le couvert forestier en plantant des arbres sur leur terrain.  Or, s’il est important de planter les bons arbres aux bons endroits, il faut aussi tenir compte des limites de propriété et communiquer avec Ontario One Call pour vérifier où se trouvent les infrastructures de services publics souterraines. Ce service gratuit protège à la fois les infrastructures essentielles des dommages, mais aussi les résidentes et résidents des blessures que peuvent causer les infrastructures comme les conduites de gaz.

Les résidentes et résidents peuvent également planter des arbres dans le cadre du Programme d’arbres hommages. À partir de ce mois-ci, les personnes qui feront planter un arbre hommage en 2027 recevront une étiquette plus grande sur laquelle il sera possible d’indiquer l’année de l’hommage, le type d’hommage et le nom de la ou des personnes à qui l’arbre est dédié. La nouvelle étiquette améliorée sera offerte pour tous les arbres plantés durant les saisons de plantation de l’automne 2026 et du printemps 2027. D’autres changements sont prévus pour l’automne 2027, sous réserve de l’approbation du budget.

Inventaire des arbres

L’inventaire des arbres est un projet continu dans toute la ville. Nous recueillons différentes données, notamment sur l’emplacement et l’essence des arbres. Cette année, nous nous concentrons sur les nouveaux lotissements et les installations municipales. L’inventaire des arbres de la Ville est un outil essentiel pour gérer ces ressources précieuses. Cette démarche favorise aussi la protection et l’amélioration des forêts urbaines et rurales afin d’en assurer la conservation pour les générations futures.

Mois de l’inspection des arbres

Le hasard a voulu que l’évènement de l’année dernière, organisé en collaboration avec nos partenaires de l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA), ait été prévu le seul jour où il a plu de tout le mois d’août! Mais cela ne nous empêche pas de retenter l’expérience cette année.

L’évènement de cette année doit avoir lieu le 26 août, de 16 h à 19 h, à la Gare de tramways du parc Britannia, à côté du Centre Ron-Kolbus Lakeside. Que ce soit chez vous ou sur un terrain public, soyez aux aguets et signalez immédiatement toute espèce envahissante à l’ACIA. Il s’agit de la meilleure manière de protéger nos arbres. L’évènement du 26 août sera l’occasion idéale d’en savoir plus sur la manière d’inspecter les arbres.

C’est la saison du camping et nous aimerions rappeler à la population qu’il est important de brûler le bois de chauffage à l’endroit où il a été acheté. Il faut éviter de le transporter d’une municipalité à l’autre, puisqu’une telle pratique peut grandement faciliter la propagation de maladies ou d’organismes nuisibles dans les arbres et les forêts. Et n’oubliez surtout pas de vérifier si les feux de camp sont autorisés!

The Tree Protection By-law came into effect on January 1, 2021. Under the Tree Protection By-law, the following protected trees cannot be injured or removed without a tree permit from the City:

• All City-owned trees throughout the urban and rural area
• All trees 10 cm or more in diameter at breast height on private properties within the urban area that are subject to a Planning Act application for Site Plan, Plan of Subdivision, or Plan of Condominium
• All trees 10 cm or more in diameter at breast height on private properties within the urban area that are over 1 hectare in size
• All distinctive trees, which are trees 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height on private properties within the urban area that are 1 hectare or less in size

The protections on privately owned trees also apply to identified urban expansion or growth areas shown on schedules in the by-law. The areas covered by the various parts of the by-law can also be viewed on geoOttawa under the Forestry heading.

The by-law also provides protection to all City-owned natural areas by regulating activities that might cause negative impacts.

Exemptions

Property owners do not need a permit to remove dead or hazardous trees on their private property where the tree is an immediate threat to public health and safety. Photos should be taken prior to removal of dead or hazardous trees in such cases to provide evidence of the condition of the tree and the reason for exemption. Note that a permit is not required to prune private trees however, pruning should be done in accordance with good arboricultural practices.

Private Ash trees that are infested with the emerald ash borer can be removed without a permit. All ash trees removed must be disposed of within the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Regulated Areas.

The by-law also provides exemptions for certain types of activities, such as normal farm practices, maintenance of power lines, aggregate extraction in accordance with provincial regulations, and professional surveying. Where one of these exemptions applies to a planned tree removal activity, it is strongly recommended to contact City Staff prior to removing the trees with the reason for the tree removal, the address and location details, and the timing for the removal. Forestry Services’ spring caliper tree planting program begins this week and will run until mid-June, weather permitting. This includes tree planting in parks, at City facilities, and along streets through Forestry Services’ lifecycle tree planting programs as well as some projects for the Schoolyard Tree Planting Grant Program. (Please note that the list of locations does not include trees planted by other City Services, through developments projects, or by applicants as a condition of tree removal permits.)

Where a tree planting is scheduled on City property adjacent to a residence, as part of our Trees in Trust Program, individual notifications will be provided to the resident in advance of planting. Residents should also expect to see utility locate flags and paint on the ground that should not be removed or mowed until planting has been completed.

Lancé cette semaine, le programme de plantation d’arbres des Services forestiers se poursuivra jusqu’à la mi-juin, si les conditions météorologiques le permettent. Des plantations auront lieu notamment dans les parcs, sur le terrain d’installations municipales et le long de rues dans le cadre de ce programme et de projets au titre du Programme de subventions pour la plantation d’arbres dans les cours d’école. (À noter que la liste des emplacements n’indique pas les sites où des arbres seront plantés par d’autres services de la Ville, dans le cadre de projets d’aménagement ou pour répondre à une condition d’un permis d’enlèvement d’arbre.)

Quand la Ville prévoit planter un arbre sur un terrain municipal jouxtant une résidence, dans le cadre de son programme Fonds des arbres, elle avisera individuellement les résidentes et résidents concernés avant la plantation. Sachez aussi qu’il ne faut pas enlever ou tondre les drapeaux et les marques au sol indiquant l’emplacement des services publics d’installations avant la plantation.

The Environment and Climate Change Committee directed staff to plant one commemorative tree in each ward as part of the Ottawa 200 celebrations this year. The trees will be installed through the City’s existing Tree Dedication Program during the fall planting season and will include special plaques marking the anniversary. The work will be delivered using approved planting locations and funded within existing Forestry Services budgets, providing a lasting legacy to mark Ottawa’s 200th anniversary.

Report confirms Ottawa’s drinking water remains safe and reliable

The Committee received the annual report on Municipal Drinking Water Systems, confirming that Ottawa’s drinking water systems are well managed, closely monitored and provide a reliable supply of safe drinking water for residents. In 2025, the City conducted more than 100,000 water quality tests across its eight municipal drinking water systems, including treatment plants drawing from the Ottawa River and well systems serving rural communities. All test results met provincial drinking water standards. The report also confirms that all systems operated within approved limits and that any minor administrative or technical issues were addressed promptly.

Le Comité de l’environnement et du changement climatique a demandé au personnel de planter un arbre commémoratif dans chaque quartier pour les célébrations d’Ottawa 200 cette année. Les arbres seront plantés dans le cadre du Programme d’arbres hommages de la Ville pendant la saison de plantation automnale et une plaque commémorant le bicentenaire sera installée pour chacun d’eux. Les travaux seront réalisés dans des endroits approuvés. Ils seront financés dans le cadre des budgets existants des Services forestiers. Ils marqueront le 200^e anniversaire d’Ottawa en laissant un héritage durable.

Un rapport confirme que l’eau potable d’Ottawa demeure sûre et fiable

Le Comité a reçu le rapport annuel sur les réseaux municipaux d’alimentation en eau potable confirmant que les réseaux d’eau potable d’Ottawa sont bien gérés, étroitement surveillés et qu’ils assurent un approvisionnement fiable et sûr en eau potable pour les résidents. En 2025, la Ville a mené plus de 100 000 analyses de la qualité de l’eau dans ses huit réseaux municipaux d’alimentation en eau potable, y compris les usines de traitement qui puisent l’eau dans la rivière des Outaouais et les réseaux de puits qui desservent les communautés rurales. Tous les résultats de ces analyses sont conformes aux normes provinciales en matière d’eau potable. Le rapport confirme également que tous les réseaux sont conformes aux limites approuvées et que tout problème administratif ou technique mineur a été résolu rapidement.

Trees do more than beautify our neighbourhoods – they help clean our air, store carbon, manage rainwater, and cool our city. With nearly 40% of Ottawa’s urban land privately owned, residents play a key role in growing our tree canopy.

In 2026, Plant Your Place! will double the numbers of trees planted by supporting the planting of approximately 2,500 trees on private land through two program streams:

• City-Wide Tree Distribution (2,400 trees)
• Full-Service Tree Planting in Priority Areas (100 trees)

City-Wide Tree Distribution

The City-Wide Tree Distribution stream will provide 2,400 trees to residents, free of charge, for planting on private property. Trees will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with a phased launch that prioritizes residents in Wards containing Priority Areas, based on the City of Ottawa’s Tree Equity Score Analysis. The program launch will be phased as follows:

• March 2, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.: Registration opens to residents living in Wards that contain a Priority Area (Wards 7, 10, 11, 14, 16, 18, 24)
• March 9, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.: Registration opens to residents in all Wards City-wide

Residents may apply for one tree per planting address by registering online. Eligible residents can choose from 16 different tree species, typically 1.5 to 2.5 metres tall. Trees must be picked up and planted by the participant, as well as the ongoing care and maintenance of their tree after receiving it. Participants will receive information and resources to support its growth and health.

Full-Service Tree Planting in Priority Areas

The Full-Service Tree Planting stream will provide professional site visits and tree planting at no cost for planting on private residential properties in the Priority Areas for tree planting. In 2026, there are 100 trees available. This stream is designed to reduce barriers and prioritize tree planting where it is needed most, based on the City of Ottawa’s Tree Equity Score Analysis. Professional site visits and tree planting are included to ensure the right tree is chosen for the right location, giving each tree the best chance to thrive.

Programme Un arbre chez vous! Arbres gratuits pour les résidents d’Ottawa

Les arbres font bien plus qu’embellir nos quartiers. Ils contribuent à purifier notre air, à emmagasiner le carbone, à gérer les eaux pluviales et à rafraîchir notre ville. Comme près de 40 % des terrains urbains d’Ottawa sont des propriétés privées, les résidents jouent un rôle clé dans la croissance de notre couvert forestier.

En 2026, le programme Un arbre chez vous! doublera le nombre d’arbres plantés en soutenant la plantation d’environ 2 500 arbres sur des terrains privés dans le cadre de deux volets du programme :

• Distribution d’arbres partout dans la ville (2 400 arbres);
• Service complet de plantation d’arbres dans les secteurs prioritaires (100 arbres).

Distribution d’arbres partout dans la ville

Dans le cadre du volet Distribution d’arbres partout dans la ville, 2 400 arbres seront remis gratuitement aux résidents, qui devront les planter sur leur propriété privée. La distribution se fera selon le principe du premier arrivé, premier servi, avec un lancement progressif accordant la priorité aux résidents des quartiers qui comprennent des secteurs prioritaires, définis par l’analyse du score d’équité en matière d’arbres de la Ville d’Ottawa. Le programme sera mis en œuvre progressivement, de la façon suivante :

• Le 2 mars 2026, à 9 h : Début de l’inscription pour les résidents des quartiers qui comprennent des secteurs prioritaires (quartiers 7, 10, 11, 14, 16, 18 et 24).
• Le 9 mars 2026, à 9 h : Début de l’inscription pour les résidents de tous les quartiers de la ville.

Les résidents peuvent demander un arbre par adresse de plantation en s’inscrivant en ligne. Les résidents admissibles ont le choix entre 16 espèces différentes, mesurant généralement entre 1,5 et 2,5 mètres de hauteur. Les arbres doivent être ramassés et plantés par le participant, qui doit également prendre soin de l’arbre et l’entretenir en continu après l’avoir reçu. Des renseignements et des ressources pour soutenir la croissance et la santé de l’arbre seront transmis aux participants.

Service complet de plantation d’arbres dans les secteurs prioritaires

Le volet Service complet de plantation d’arbres proposera aux résidents des visites de professionnels sur place et la plantation d’arbres sans frais sur des propriétés résidentielles privées dans les secteurs prioritaires. En 2026, une centaine d’arbres seront disponibles. Ce volet est conçu pour réduire les obstacles et donner la priorité à la plantation d’arbres là où elle est le plus nécessaire, en fonction de l’analyse du score d’équité en matière d’arbres de la Ville d’Ottawa. Des visites de professionnels sur place et la plantation d’arbres sont incluses afin de s’assurer que l’emplacement convient à l’arbre choisi, donnant ainsi à chaque arbre les meilleures conditions pour s’épanouir.

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how do we dispose of thee?

Again this year, when it comes time for residents to take down their real tree, we are encouraging them to consider reuse or donate options. We have various options outlined on our website at Ottawa.ca/ChristmasTrees, including:

• Reuse options:
  • Leave the evergreen in your backyard to help provide shelter for wildlife and improve your soil as it decomposes.
  • Use trimmed branches as garden stakes and supports for vegetable vines, flowers and bushes.
  • Use branches or pieces of tree trunk to make rustic garden edging.
  • Cut pieces bend and shape sticks to make tea candle bases, play dough stamps or hanging ornaments.

• Donate options:
  • Beginning December 23, you can bring your tree to the National Capital Commission so that it can be used along the Rideau Canal Skateway. The drop off location will be indicated with signage on Colonel By Drive, just west of the Bronson Avenue bridge.
  • Reach out to the Vanderlaand Barnyard Zoo who accept Christmas trees for their animals to enjoy.

Undecorated Christmas trees can also be placed at the curb alongside the green bin no later than 7 am on their scheduled collection day. Setting out waste before collection day during the winter increases the risk of items becoming frozen in snowbanks. Trees that are still decorated, wrapped in plastic, or frozen in snowbanks will not be collected.

What happens to Christmas trees at the curb?

Christmas trees placed at the curbside for collection are taken to either the City’s contracted organics processing facility or the Trail Waste Facility Landfill. They are either composted, or they are mulched and used on the landfill’s tipping face as a beneficial cover material – a regulatory requirement for the City.

Après les fêtes de fin d’année, nous encourageons cette année encore les résidents à faire don de leur sapin de Noël naturel ou à lui donner une deuxième vie. Diverses options sont proposées sur notre page Web ottawa.ca/arbresdenoel, telles que des :

• options de réutilisation :
  • Laissez le conifère dans votre cour pour qu’il serve d’abri à la faune et enrichisse votre sol en se décomposant.
  • Utilisez les branches dénudées comme tuteurs de jardin et supports pour les plantes potagères, les fleurs et les buissons.
  • Utilisez des branches ou des morceaux de tronc d’arbre pour créer des bordures de jardin rustiques.
  • Coupez des morceaux, pliez et travaillez les bouts de branche pour en faire des porte-bougies, des tampons à pâte à modeler ou des ornements.
• options de don :
  • Dès le 23 décembre, apportez votre sapin à la Commission de la capitale nationale afin qu’il puisse être installé en bordure de la patinoire du canal Rideau. Le lieu de dépôt sera indiqué par des panneaux sur la promenade Colonel-By, juste à l’ouest du pont de l’avenue Bronson.
  • Communiquez avec le Vanderlaand Barnyard Zoo, qui accepte les arbres de Noël pour le plaisir de ses animaux.

Les sapins de Noël dépouillés de leurs décorations peuvent également être déposés en bordure de rue, à côté du bac vert, au plus tard à 7 h le jour de la collecte. En hiver, le risque que les déchets gèlent dans les bancs de neige augmente si on les sort avant le jour de la collecte. Les arbres encore décorés, emballés dans du plastique ou pris dans un banc de neige ne seront pas ramassés.

Qu’advient-il des sapins de Noël déposés en bordure de rue?

Les sapins de Noël déposés en bordure de rue pour la collecte sont acheminés vers l’installation de traitement des déchets organiques sous contrat avec la Ville ou à la décharge du chemin Trail. Ils sont soit compostés, soit réduits en paillis, puis utilisés comme matériau de recouvrement dans la zone de déversement, conformément aux exigences réglementaires de la Ville.

Forestry Services’ fall calliper tree planting program began on October 1,  and will run until mid to late November, weather permitting. This includes tree planting in parks, at City facilities, and along streets through Forestry Services’ lifecycle tree planting programs, as well as some projects for the Schoolyard Tree Planting Grant Program. (Please note that the list of locations does not include trees planted by other City Services, through developments, city infrastructure construction projects, or by applicants as a condition of tree removal permits.)

In this round of planting, approximately 178 trees are being planted through the Trees in Trust, Trees in Parks program, and Right of Way Replacement. There are also another 175 trees being planted by the Eco West Enders at  CARDELREC on October 18 as a community tree planting project. Volunteers will be planting 175 trees and everyone is invited to join in the fun. This is a great way for students to “grow” some volunteer hours. The City will provide all necessary equipment for planting, including shovels and mulch. Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather (as it will go ahead rain or shine) and bring gloves if needed. For further information, please contact, kirri.lean@gmail.com.

Mise à jour concernant la plantation d’arbres à l’automne 2025

Le Programme de plantation d’arbres de l’automne des Services forestiers a été lancé le mercredi 1^er octobre et se poursuivra jusqu’à la mi ou la fin novembre, si les conditions météorologiques le permettent. Des arbres seront plantés dans les parcs, sur les terrains d’installations municipales et le long des rues selon les programmes réguliers de plantation des Services forestiers, ainsi que dans le cadre de projets liés au Programme de subventions pour la plantation d’arbres dans les cours d’école. À noter que les arbres plantés par d’autres services de la Ville, dans le cadre de projets d’aménagement ou de construction d’infrastructure municipale ou pour répondre à une condition d’un permis d’enlèvement d’arbre, ne figurent pas sur la liste des emplacements.

Au cours de cette période, environ 178 arbres seront plantés dans le cadre du programme Fonds des arbres, du programme de plantation d’arbres dans les parcs et du remplacement des arbres sur les emprises. Il y aura également 175 arbres qui seront plantés par le groupe EcoWestenders à CARDELREC dans le cadre d’un projet de plantation d’arbres communautaire.

Des bénévoles planteront 175 arbres et tout le monde est invité à se joindre à eux. Voilà une excellente façon pour les élèves de « récolter » des heures de bénévolat. La Ville fournira tout l’équipement nécessaire, y compris les pelles et le paillis. Les bénévoles sont encouragés à s’habiller selon la météo (car l’activité aura lieu qu’il pleuve ou qu’il fasse beau) et à apporter des gants, au besoin.
