La version française suit

(This is the latest in a series of profiles about Stittsville residents who are making a difference in our community and beyond. If you have a suggestion for someone we should interview, please contact us.)

Empowerment, equity, partnership, and innovation.

These words aptly describe the work of the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC). They are the guiding principles driving the centre and its representatives to support our communities. For Michelle Hurtubise, the WOCRC’s executive director, these principles continue to enrich her life and those she serves.

“I was drawn to the WOCRC because it brought a lot of my experience into one resource. It was exciting and appealing to me,” says Hurtubise. “I wanted to be in direct service to people who needed these types of resources.”

Hurtubise specializes in the mental health of children and adults. She also has extensive experience working with the Violence Against Women sector and has become an advocate for change. With 30 years of experience working with community-based health and social services, she is an asset to our community.

The WOCRC promotes health, safety and wellness in our communities. They provide and connect individuals and families with social and health services across the region. A list of services and support programs can be found at https://wocrc.ca/programs-and-services/

Along full-time and part-time staff at the centre, Hurtubise currently works with more than 150 volunteers at the centre to deliver programs to our Stittsville community. The WOCRC also services Kanata, West Carleton-March, and Rideau-Goulbourn. Pre-pandemic, those volunteer numbers reached more than 200.

Although the pandemic has changed the way they meet the community’s needs, it hasn’t slowed them down.

Meals on Wheels, Online Virtual Events, outdoor events (when not in lockdown), individual virtual counseling services, online workshops, special initiatives to meet the needs of Violence Against Women, and a host of other services and programs are offered.

“When the pandemic happened, we were able to turn things around and get up and running virtually within 48 hours,” says Hurtubise. Since then, the WOCRC has improved its online approach and built sustainable programs. Their online presence has become more sophisticated and seamless.

“The team of staff and volunteers have gone above and beyond to make sure our community’s most vulnerable have their needs met,” she says. “They are creative and have adapted to the changes.”

When not working with the WOCRC, Hurtubise cycles and hikes. She also gives back to the greater community by volunteering with upwithwomen.org, and the Loran Scholars Foundation.

“It is essential to commit to community,” says Hurtubise. “Engage, be part of making our communities better. We need to look after each other.”

La version française suit

(This is the second in a series of profiles about Stittsville residents who are making a difference in our community and beyond. If you have a suggestion for someone we should interview, please contact us.)

The pandemic is testing every facet of our City. There’s an unprecedented demand at food banks and other services catering to at-risk community members. For those more vulnerable in our community, it may seem like there is nowhere to go. During times like these, it takes citizens like Joseph Carbonetto to restore faith in humanity and help others survive the eye of the storm.

“I feel like I have learned over the years to listen to the needs of our community,” says Carbonetto.

Carbonetto, a Stittsville resident for 20 years, is no stranger to fundraising and special events that result in resources being given back to community members most in need.

Using organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, he has mobilized community engagement and has also orchestrated fundraisers for Chrysalis House, the Stittsville Food Bank, and individuals within our community.

Many residents are familiar with Carbonetto’s community involvement over the years. His elaborate Halloween and Christmas decorations, selling Christmas trees, or being visible at the Stittsville Village Market square has not gone unnoticed. In 2020, Carbonetto didn’t stay behind the scenes. Instead, he stepped up his initiatives and became a beacon of hope to those in our community. Those initiatives just looked a little different than usual.

“I was approached in the early part of the pandemic about masks. After collaborating on the best approach, we set up in the Stittsville Market in The Barn and promoted it as a fundraiser for the Food Bank and eventually for Chrysalis House,” says Carbonetto.

He also coordinated additional fundraisers and donations for Chrysalis House throughout the year. Chrysalis House is a family and emergency shelter operated by the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC), which connects those in need with services and resources. They serve children, youth, parents, adults, and seniors and support our communities by providing and coordinating accessible health and social services.

Online spaghetti suppers, online auctions, and adapting the Haunted Heritage Tours were among a few of his other initiatives.

“There are more than 100 immune-compromised residents in Stittsville,” says Carbonetto. “When the Barn in the Village Square closed for the season in November, people still needed a place to go.”

To meet this need, Carbonetto created a window shopping experience at his home. With two bay windows easily and safely accessible to foot traffic, he showcases PPE and other related items. Shoppers can purchase and have them delivered or safely picked up on-site.

Carbonetto has been giving back to the community since his brother Wayne passed away in 2004 of cancer. He wanted to honour his memory by “going all out” for Halloween, his brother’s favourite time of year. Carbonetto raised several tonnes of food for the Food Bank in those initial years.

“That was 16 years ago, and things have just grown from there,” says Carbonetto.

For those in the community who want to get involved and give back to our Stittsville Community, Carbonetto has some advice.

“Listen to the needs of the community. Reaching one person and helping that person reach his or her needs is for the good of the whole community,” he says.

If you are making a list of ways to help out or give back, make sure the community is on the list, he adds.

“There are several groups right here in Stittsville,” says Carbonetto. “Pick a registered charity like the Lions Club, Legion, Knights of Columbus and others. Call them and ask them what they need. Is there someone’s birthday at Chrysalis House? A gift for a child going through a difficult time can go a long way,” he says.

“We are all in this together. We don’t know who is alone. Start by reaching out to your neighbour.”
