A Water Safety Statement is to provide notice of high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors that could be dangerous for recreational users such as anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, pets, etc. Flooding is not expected.

This Water Safety Statement is an update to the Flood Outlook Statement issued March 4, 2026, for the Mississippi River Watershed, and the Flood Watch issued March 9, 2026, for the Carp River Watershed.

Water Safety Statement - Indicated as "yellow" for both the Mississippi and Carp River watersheds

Weather Forecast: On March 16, 2026, air temperatures rose above 10°C, followed by a mix of rain and snowfall. Since then, temperatures have declined. Over the next 14 days, daytime temperatures are expected to remain  around 0°C, while nighttime temperatures will fall below freezing, averaging around -5°C with occasional colder periods. There is also the potential for light rain or snow during this period.

Watershed Conditions: Streamflows are elevated above normal levels and are expected to gradually decline across the system. Lake levels remain above average for this time of year, driven by early March rainfall and warm temperatures that triggered an early onset of snowmelt. While conditions are beginning to stabilize following this event, levels remain elevated. Significant snowpack remains in the upper watershed, though snow water equivalent is now within the normal range.

Risks: Rivers and streams may experience higher water levels, fast flowing water and slippery or unstable banks.

Actions: Residents are reminded to exercise extreme caution near all water bodies due to high flows and slippery conditions. Parents are encouraged to remind children about these dangers and provide appropriate supervision.

Residents in flood prone areas are advised to maintain close watch on water levels and flows and take the necessary precautions to protect their property by:

  • Ensuring sump pumps are clear, in good working condition and have a backwater valve.
  • Having a portable generator and backup pump available.
  • Ensuring downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 meters from any structure.
  • Removing or securing items that might float away if flows increase.
  • Keeping emergency phone numbers handy.
  • Familiarizing yourself with your municipality’s emergency preparedness plan.

Duration: This message is in effect until March 31, 2026 or until an update has been issued.
