The late Gord Atkinson was one of the biggest names in Ottawa radio for nearly 50 years, and soon the longtime Stittsville resident will have a street named for him in our community.
I met up with Atkinson’s family last week and we walked to the location of the future street along Hazeldean Road, just east of the water tower. It will be named “Gord Atkinson Way”. Pictured above are three of Atkinson’s seven children: Greg Atkinson, Mary Elin Moore, and Peter Atkinson.
During his career, Atkinson worked at CFRA and interviewed some of the biggest stars of the day, including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Bing Crosby. He also gave back to the community, hosting the annual CFMO-Ottawa Citizen Christmas Exchange Fundraising Broadcast; arranging a Frank Sinatra/Rich Little Benefit Concert that raised over one million dollars to build the Civic Hospital’s Special Care Nursery in 1982; and collaborating with Rich Little for a benefit concert that launched Centrepointe Theatre in 1988. He passed away in 2021 at age 94.

Le regretté Gord Atkinson a été l’un des plus grands noms de la radio d’Ottawa pendant près de 50 ans et, bientôt, ce résident de longue date de Stittsville aura une rue nommée en son honneur dans notre quartier.
J’ai rencontré sa famille la semaine dernière et nous avons marché le long du chemin Hazeldean jusqu’à l’emplacement de la future rue, juste à l’est du château d’eau. Ce sera la voie Gord Atkinson. La photo ci-dessus montre trois des sept enfants du célèbre animateur: Greg Atkinson, Mary Elin Moore, and Peter Atkinson.
Au cours de sa carrière, Gord Atkinson a travaillé à la station CFRA et interviewé certaines des plus grandes vedettes de l’époque, dont Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley et Bing Crosby. Il donnait aussi à la communauté : il a animé la collecte de fonds annuelle pour le Partage de Noël de la station CFMO et The Ottawa Citizen, organisé un concert caritatif de Frank Sinatra et Rich Little qui a permis d’amasser plus d’un million de dollars pour construire la pouponnière de soins spéciaux de l’Hôpital Civic en 1982, et collaboré avec Rich Little pour un concert caritatif qui a mené aux Théâtres Centrepointe en 1988. Il est décédé en 2021 à l’âge de 94 ans.
