Ottawa Fire Services received more than 125,000 calls for service to the communications centre in 2025. That is a nine-per-cent increase from the previous year, reflecting Ottawa’s growing population and the rise in more complex emergencies. While call volumes increased, the number of actual emergency responses rose only slightly, as several calls can relate to the same incident or do not require a fire response. Even with this increased demand, the service met most response time standards set by Council, delivering a strong and dependable response when every second counts.

Medical calls attended by Ottawa Fire Services decreased by 12 per cent compared to the previous year, reflecting improvements to the emergency dispatch system with Ottawa Paramedic Service that help ensure emergency resources are used more effectively. In some areas, longer travel distances, traffic and growth in developing communities contributed to longer response times. Overall, performance remains strong and close to established standards, and the City is monitoring trends and planning ahead to maintain reliable service.

The service is using data to decide where stations, staff and equipment are needed most. This ensures reliable coverage in both urban and rural communities today while also preparing for future growth. It maintains international accreditation, recognizing high standards and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Prevention efforts are also making a difference. The False Fire Alarm Strategy is helping stabilize nuisance alarm calls, reducing unnecessary disruptions and ensuring firefighters are available for real emergencies when they are needed most.

The report highlights Council’s continued investments in firefighters and the resources they need to serve residents safely and effectively. Last year, the service hired 90 new recruits, modernized facilities such as Fire Station 81 in Stittsville, and advanced planning for a new training facility.

In 2025, the service also expanded mental health and wellness supports, including access to a staff psychologist, peer programs and cancer prevention initiatives. These efforts help ensure firefighters remain healthy, resilient and ready to serve when residents need them. The report also highlights efforts to build a more diverse workforce, including recruitment initiatives and partnerships that create pathways into the service for underrepresented groups.

City Council will consider the report on Wednesday, June 10.

Over the past few years we’ve made some big strides forward to advance improvements on Stittsville Main Street. In 2020 we published a discussion paper called Revitalizing Stittsville Main Street . Hundreds of residents, businesses, and community groups provided comments through workshops, surveys, and email, summarized in this “What we heard” report.

That led to the development of the Stittsville Main Street Public Realm Plan, approved by City Council in 2022. It’s a reconstruction of the street to modern standards, and the first major upgrade since the early 1990s. Highlights from the plan include:

Wider sidewalks

Bike lanes (cycletracks) on both sides of the street

Raised and protected intersections

Street tree planting and greening

Crossing improvements at the Trans Canada Trail and Poole Creek

Street furnishings, gateway, and placemaking opportunities

Improved bus stops with space for shelters

Renewed street and pedestrian-level lighting

The Stittsville Main Street upgrades were included in the new Transportation Master Plan, approved by City Council in July 2025. That means the project will be prioritized for funding and construction in the next few years. Total cost of the project in 2022 was estimated at just under $23-million.

In the meantime, we’re continuing to work with residents, businesses, landowners, and community groups to revitalize the street through new development and beautification efforts such as the flower pot pilot program, new street furnishing, public art, and more.

On June 2 and 3, 2026, Hydro Ottawa will be installing overhead infrastructure that will impact customers on Cosanti Drive, Maverick Crescent, Ocala Street, Orvieto Way, Painted Sky Way and Taliesin Crescent. To complete this work safely, two planned power interruptions are required.

You may notice an increased presence of construction and traffic control measures, including lane reductions, to ensure the safety of residents and our crews. Construction activities will occur on the City of Ottawa Road Right-of-Way – a legal right of access for Hydro Ottawa to install and maintain its electrical distribution system.

As mentioned above, two planned power outages will be required to proceed with this work. All impacted customers are contacted by phone, text or email – depending on the communication preferences indicated on their account – and informed by a written notice delivered to their door. Their qualified team will work efficiently to minimize any inconvenience; however, please note that the outages may be rescheduled in the event of circumstances beyond their control.

Impacted streets: Cosanti Drive, Maverick Crescent, Ocala Street, Orvieto Way, Painted Sky Way and Taliesin Crescent

Project start date: June 2, 2026
Project end date: June 3, 2026

Planned power outage: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day

Hydro Ottawa would also like to take this opportunity to thank all residents in advance for their patience and understanding throughout the delivery of this important project.

Rues touchées : promenades Cosanti, Maverick Crescent, Ocala Street, Orvieto Way, Painted Sky Way et Taliesin Crescent

For the past few weeks, Ottawa drivers have experienced very heavy traffic in both directions on the Queensway due to lane changes and reductions in place for installation of a new highway sign. Here’s some information provided by City of Ottawa staff about the work.

Q: What is the signage being installed?

A: To accommodate the construction of the Stage 2 LRT guideway tunnel, the original overhead sign was removed. The westbound sign will direct drivers to Highways 416 and 417 and provide guidance for local exits to Greenbank Road and Pinecrest Road.

Original sign:

Q: What is the actual construction work being done?

A: The current phase of work involves construction of the sign support foundations, including excavation, drilling, installations of reinforcements, concrete works, reinstatement of the median barrier, asphalt works at the median, underground electrical conduit installation for median lighting continuity and associated traffic staging. Additional activities related to sign structure erection and commissioning will occur in future phases and will take place during an overnight closure to minimize additional disruptions.

Q: Were there other alternatives analyzed that would have had less impact?

A: Options were analyzed and developed in coordination with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) regarding design and construction options. The design and construction plan that is being implemented is the design that was accepted by the MTO.

Q: Are there regulatory (mandatory) requirements for this sign or is it a “nice-to-have”?

A: The sign requirements are in accordance with the MTO’s regulations and standards. As indicated above the original overhead sign was removed to accommodate the Stage 2 tunnel works.

Q: The construction began in early May – why haven’t we seen very much work at the site?

A: During the first two weeks, work activities included temporary lighting continuity modifications within the median, asphalt and median barrier removals, utility and drainage investigations, and assessment of potential conflicts between the proposed sign footing and the existing storm sewer system. These activities were necessary prior to commencing major foundation works.

Q: Have any measurements been done to quantify the amount of traffic congestion and other issues that the lane closures have caused?

A: Traffic operations and congestion impacts continue to be monitored throughout construction. As part of mitigation efforts, the bus-only ramp from Woodroffe to westbound Highway 417 has been temporarily opened to general traffic to help reduce congestion and improve westbound traffic flow. Traffic counts are taken throughout construction so the impact of mitigation measures can be reviewed analytically.

Q: Why will this take until July to complete?

A: The median sign foundation consists of a deep foundation system requiring caisson installation. The work involves multiple sequential operations, including excavation, drilling, reinforcement placement, concrete installation, curing periods, and restoration activities, all within a constrained highway environment.

These works involve invasive construction activities within the highway median and require a safe and stable work zone for both workers and the traveling public. Due to the nature of the operations, temporary short-duration closures were not feasible to safely complete the required work activities.

Work is now expected to be wrapped up by July 6, three weeks ahead of the original schedule.

We understand the impacts this congestion has on residents. We will continue to look for ways to improve the flow of traffic and accelerate the schedule for this work, where possible. We appreciate your patience during this mandatory work.

Council today approved projects to help revitalize and enhance the downtown and ByWard Market. The funding to support these initiatives will be reallocated from the William Street pedestrian and streetscape project, funded by the Ontario-Ottawa Agreement. That project has been deferred beyond the timelines set out in the agreement, so the City is proposing to fund other priority initiatives that will make a positive impact in the downtown and ByWard Market.

The projects focus on two priority areas: improving safety and making the area more vibrant to attract residents and visitors.

To improve safety and security, staff have proposed funding for:

Rideau Station and Rideau Street corridor improvements

Rideau–Sussex underpass improvements

Security staffing support for organizations serving complex clients through de-escalation, incident prevention and coordination with outreach and emergency response partners

Ottawa Public Health’s Needle and Drug Equipment Collection Program

Unsheltered homelessness outreach and connections to safe spaces

For vibrancy to attract residents and visitors, staff have proposed:

“Best of ByWard” four-season placemaking initiative to transform underutilized plazas and portions of ByWard Market Square into flexible public gathering spaces that support year-round activity

District-wide navigation, access and parking strategy to improve navigation and mobility

Brand and place identity plan to strengthen the identity of the ByWard Market

Historic Market Building illumination exhibition in winter months

Metcalfe Plaza project to encourage new and diverse cultural and placemaking activities throughout the year

Savour ByWard Market farm-to-table experience, a signature culinary experience showcasing local farmers, artisan producers and regional food and beverage offerings

ByWard Under the Lights: Celebrating 200 Years, a two-day night market celebrating the spirit, diversity and traditions of the ByWard Market through food vendors, artisans and immersive programming

The reallocation approved today is subject to provincial approval in accordance with the Ontario-Ottawa Agreement.

Council prepares for Green Bin service beyond 2030

The new contract will let bidders process organic waste using either aerobic composting, which uses oxygen to break down materials into compost, or anaerobic digestion, which breaks down waste without oxygen to produce renewable gas. Both keep food waste out of landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The new stream would support low‑rise, multi‑unit buildings, including condominiums, co‑operatives, rental properties and non-profit affordable housing. It would help these property owners complete larger, shared projects that manage stormwater on their properties. This would help prevent localized flooding, reduce icy conditions in winter and protect shared spaces, such as parking areas and walkways.

The City will offer rebates of up to $30,000 per property, with up to $40,000 for non-profit affordable housing providers, helping to offset the cost of larger shared projects. The new rebate stream would be funded within the program’s existing budget.

La version française suit

The City of Ottawa will be undertaking maintenance work on the Granite Ridge stormwater management (SWM) pond and drainage ditch located at 164 Iber Road and 185 Iber Road, respectively. This work is scheduled to begin this summer.

WHY: Stormwater management ponds are an important part of the City’s drainage system. They help collect and treat runoff from nearby streets and properties before it enters local creeks and rivers. Over time, these ponds accumulate sediment which reduces their capacity and effectiveness. To ensure the pond continues to function as designed, the accumulated sediment needs to be removed periodically.

HOW: The clean-out process will involve temporarily draining the SWM pond to allow for the removal of built-up sediment. Once the pond is dewatered, the material will be excavated and hauled off-site for disposal. The downstream drainage ditch will also be rehabilitated as part of this project to improve the performance of the ditch. The pond and surrounding areas will then be restored to their original condition.

WHEN: Construction is expected to take place in summer 2026 and is expected to last several weeks.

Every effort will be made to minimize disruption to nearby properties throughout the work. Some construction noise, truck activity, and temporary fencing around the work areas can be expected for a limited period. The City and its contractor will complete all work safely and in full compliance with environmental protection measures.

Pedestrian traffic control measures will be in place for the duration of the construction activities. Temporary closure of the pedestrian pathway on the south side of the facility will be necessary for a portion of the work. Impacts to pathway users will be minimized to the fullest extent possible, within the constraints of the project requirements.

For further information about this Notice and the pond clean-out project, please contact:

Last fall, the Ontario Government banned the use of Automated Speed Enforcement (speed cameras) anywhere in the province, including school zones.

As a replacement, they’ve created a new “Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF)” with $210-million for municipalities to increase road safety in school zones and community safety zones where cameras were previously located. Cities can apply to use this funding for things like speed bumps, raised crosswalks, roundabouts, and signage.

Ottawa has applied for funding to pay for safety infrastructure in several school zones across Ottawa.

St. Stephen Catholic School (Stittsville Main Street in Jackson Trails)
Four sets of speed cushions on Stittsville Main Street Horseshoe Crescent and Hazeldean Road – see map below. (Speed cushions are a type of speed bumps that slow down most vehicles but allow larger vehicles like fire trucks to pass through without slowing.)
A PXO (pedestrian crosswalk) at Stittsville Main and Bandelier

Sacred Heart High School (Abbott Street)
Four sets of speed cushions on Abbott Street, between Amy Street and Carbery Drive – see map below. (Speed cushions are a type of speed bumps that slow down most vehicles but allow larger vehicles like fire trucks to pass through without slowing.)

Holy Spirit School (Stittsville Main Street)
Thermoplastic pavement markings, speed display boards in both directions, and flashing beacons in both directions.

École Paul-Desmarais (Abbott Street)
Thermoplastic pavement markings, speed display boards in both directions, and flashing beacons in both directions.

École Saint-Jean-Paul II (Abbott Street)
Upgrade of the pedestrian crossing at Abbott & Tall Tree to a raised crossing.

These locations are approximate and may be adjusted slightly if impacts are identified during the detailed design stage. Other site-specific constraints identified during detailed design may also affect the feasibility of the proposed measures. Timing of installation depends on when the provincial government approves Ottawa’s request for funding.

We’d love to hear from you on this. Please contact our office with your feedback and questions. We’ll summarize any feedback received and share it with the City’s traffic staff.

Please note:

Schools that did not have a speed cameras are not eligible for RSIF funding. However, there are temporary traffic calming measures planned for other locations this year, including speed display boards along Cope Drive at Shingwàkons Public School, St. Bernadette Catholic School, and Maplewood Secondary School.

Sacred Heart High School (rue Abbott)
