The results are in! Our survey on the future of Amberway Park is now closed, after 28 days of accepting feedback. We received 67 responses, nearly all from the surrounding streets of Savage Drive, Denham Way, Greer Street, and Victor Street. Thanks to everyone who reflected on what they wanted to see in a renewed park and took the time to let us know their thoughts.
The responses we received revealed a clear consensus to keep Amberway Park much the same as it is now, with only small improvements.
The most common idea we heard was to preserve the grass open space so that residents can use it for multiple activities. There were concerns that too much programmed space would interfere with the flexible use of the park for throwing a ball or a frisbee around, playing soccer, flying a kite, or anything else that the lawn has been used for in the past several decades.
There were also many suggestions to add subtle landscaping enhancements to the park, which would need to be balanced against the preference for open space. Some proposals included a pathway between Denham Way and Savage Drive, benches or other forms of seating, and gardens.
We also heard many requests to leave the single hoop basketball key intact, but with improvements made to the pavement around it. For the winter months, several survey respondents stated their desire to see a new volunteer-run outdoor rink at this location. (Doing so would require a water hook-up, which is possible but may be a challenge with the funds available.)
In summary, our main recommendations for Amberway Park following the survey are:
- Keep the park mostly the same
- Preserve the open grass area for flexible use
- Improve the existing single-hoop basketball key
- Introduce landscaping features (pathways, benches, gardens) without taking away too much space from the lawn
- Explore the feasibility of adding a community-run ice rink in the winter
We will pass along the survey results and this “what we heard” report to the next councillor.
