This month, the City of Ottawa will begin demolition of the former Pretty Street Community Centre building at 2 Pretty Street in order to prepare the site for future not-for-profit housing.
Work is expected to begin in the last week of September. Demolition activities are planned to occur over approximately two to three weeks, with site restoration and grading activities following thereafter. All work should be substantially complete by the end of October 2026.
As is common for construction projects, you may experience inconvenience during this work, such as traffic delays, noise, and dust. The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to your daily life.
A 2022 building audit for the Pretty Street building found the centre to be in “poor condition and nearing critical condition” in large part due to a significant mould issue in the basement. Earlier this year, the City launched a process to select a not-for-profit housing provider to develop a low-rise rental apartment building for the property. This anticipated development will require a Site Plan Control approval, which includes a public notification process—detailed plans for review will be made available when that time comes.
