City staff are recommending approval of a zoning by-law amendment to permit an indoor water park, family entertainment centre, 236-room hotel, and restaurant along Palladium Drive.
The project will come to Planning & Housing Committee on Wednesday, September 2, with a final decision coming the following week at City Council.
Councillor Glen’s comments from the staff report
I’ve heard a lot of excitement about this project from residents. This facility would generate jobs, along with tourism and economic benefits for the west end.At the same time, there will be impacts to the nearby Connections neighbourhood, particularly from the additional traffic generated by visitors to the hotel and water park. Through the site plan process, staff must review the following:
Can a right-in/right-out entrance be added to Palladium Drive, to reduce the amount of traffic accessing the site via Derreen/Culdaff. Capacity and design of the Derreen-Culdaff intersection. The facility will generate significantly more traffic than what was originally anticipated for Culdaff. I would like to see a traffic light or roundabout at this intersection, instead of a four-way stop. Future transit access. Ensure safe pedestrian access to all current and future bus stops on Palladium, Derreen, and Robert Grant. North-south access over the Queensway – install continuous sidewalk and bicycle infrastructure on both sides of the road over Palladium Drive, between Robert Grant and Campeau.
