The City of Ottawa’s Heritage Planning staff are recommending that 10 Cedarow Court in Stittsville be designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. Known as the David Hartin House, the building dates back to 1876 and is one of only few remaining stone buildings from that era that still stand in the community today.
Staff recommend heritage designation for the David Hartin House because it meets three of the criteria required by the Act. First, property’s design value—including elements such as its gable roof, Gothic Revival windows, and stone construction—make it a representative example of the Ontario Cottage typology. Second, it has historical value for its association with the Hartins, an important family in Goulbourn Township’s early history. Finally, 10 Cedarow Court has contextual value for the property’s historical connection to its surroundings—including its relation to other nearby stone houses, such as the recently designated Patrick Hartin House.
The Built Heritage Committee will consider the report at its meeting on November 5, 2026. That meeting will also include a recommendation to designate another stone building from this period, the Jack Hodgins House at 26 Castlefrank Road in Kanata. If the Built Heritage Committee approves the recommendation in the staff report, the final decision to designate both of these properties will be made by City Council at a later meeting. Designation would protect these generations-old buildings for future residents of Stittsville.
Here are Councillor Glen’s comments to the staff report:
This is another important 19th century stone building in Stittsville, and a fixture here for 150 years. Several owners over the recent decades have maintained and rejuvenated the building with care and respect. It is currently home to Jask Salon and Day Spa, and owner Bob Goharzad recently took me on a tour of the house and grounds. He deserves a lot of credit for his stewardship of the property and the incredible renovations inside. I’m very glad to support staff’s recommendation for designation of this property under the Ontario Heritage Act.
