I remain extremely thankful that Stittsville was not significantly affected by the July 1 storm, considering the large number of homes and businesses affected in other parts of Ottawa.

We’ve been asking residents in Stittsville who had basement flooding to please report that via ottawa.ca/311/. Even if you do not require assistance or if you’ve finished your clean-up, the information is still useful to understand where there may have been issues with stormwater management in different neighbourhoods. So far we have received just eight reports from Stittsville residents.

I’ve shared a memo below with data from municipal rain gauges across Ottawa, and the amount of rain recorded was remarkable. Some areas of the City experienced rainfall approaching or exceeding that associated with a 1-in-200-year storm. However, there was significant variation across the City.

Rain gauges in and around Stittsville recorded a range of precipitation:

Maple Grove: 104 mm

Jackson Trails: 65 mm

Glen Cairn (Kanata): 96 mm

Monahan (Kanata): 69 mm

St. Gabriel (Kanata): 114 mm

Carp: 80 mm

Richmond: 28 mm

If you’re looking for any updates about the storm response, including waste pick-up, compassionate grants, and so on, please visit ottawa.ca. While damage may have been minimal in Stittsville, I know a lot of residents have been helping friends and families in other wards. Please reach out if we can help in any way.

The City recognizes the significant impact this rainfall event had on many residents, businesses, and communities. We appreciate the challenges and disruption faced by those affected and remain committed to learning from the event and identifying opportunities to improve community resilience. Background On July 1, 2026, the City of Ottawa experienced intense rainfall over a short period of time, along with high winds. The extreme weather event caused flooding and widespread hydro outages across the city. Initial weather and rainfall data was collected from the Ottawa International Airport, which houses Environment and Climate Change Canada’s local weather collection information. However, this data is not representative of the impact across Ottawa due to the city’s geography. City staff have since undertaken a more thorough assessment of the storm to understand the localized intensity and scope of the event. Storm Characterization and Rain Gauge Results The City of Ottawa maintains approximately 26 rain gauges throughout the city to measure how much rain falls and where it occurs. These gauges continuously monitor rainfall intensity and accumulation. Rainfall data collected by the City is routinely cross-referenced with Environment and Climate Change Canada radar data to provide a more complete understanding of storm event characteristics across the municipality. The information helps staff track storm events, understand flooding impacts, and manage and improve the City’s stormwater system. A Rainfall Distribution Map, Appendix A, illustrates the spatial distribution of rainfall across the City of Ottawa on July 1, 2026, based on preliminary (unverified) measurements from the City's rain gauge network. The data show significant variability in rainfall totals across the city, ranging" width="1194" height="1550" srcset="https://glengower.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Memo-July-1-Extreme-Weather-Event-EN_Page_1b.jpg 1194w, https://glengower.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Memo-July-1-Extreme-Weather-Event-EN_Page_1b-980x1272.jpg 980w, https://glengower.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Memo-July-1-Extreme-Weather-Event-EN_Page_1b-480x623.jpg 480w" sizes="(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1194px, 100vw" />
The following changes have been made to the proposed building heights:

The tower at the corner of Hazeldean Road and Savage Drive (Building A) has been reduced to 15 storeys.

The other tower along Hazeldean Road (Building B), which abuts 5862 Hazeldean Road, has been increased to 27 storeys.

Primarily, the building heights should be capped at 18 storeys maximum to match the City’s new zoning by-law. My team and I will share more information next week once we’ve had a chance to review the new documentation.”

Photo: Empty land after the trees and vegetation were removed

UPDATE (July 10):

Our office met virtually with Hydro One on Friday morning and they provided the following updates:

They are not planning any new tree planting on the site.

They will be contacting neighbouring residents with an information letter and a voucher to purchase trees for their own backyards, as a “goodwill gesture” to mitigate the loss of trees.

They are not planning to add any additional fencing on the site.

The remaining trees will continue to be maintained and will not be removed.

They are not planning to expand the current footprint of the electrical equipment.

They are asking residents with questions or concerns contact their Customer Relations team directly at CustomerRelations@hydroone.com.

I’m still not satisfied with this response and will continue advocating for trees to be replanted along the edges of the property. I’ve asked Hydro One to provide my office with a copy of the letter to residents and a written summary that we can post to this page. Hydro One is also unwilling to participate in a meeting with residents.

UPDATE (June 26):

On Thursday afternoon, our office met with Hydro One to discuss the situation in more detail. During this meeting, we raised several key issues on behalf of the community:

We requested additional context about why the tree clearing occurred, along with greater clarity around their processes, including how and when residents are notified.

We asked Hydro One to meet directly with affected residents to address their questions and concerns. They have indicated they will follow up with us on this request.

We also strongly advocated for appropriate mitigation measures to address the tree loss, including the planting of new trees in the buffer zone.

Hydro One has asked that any residents with questions or concerns contact their Customer Relations team directly at CustomerRelations@hydroone.com.

We will continue to engage with Hydro One and advocate for residents. We will keep monitoring the situation and share further updates as they become available.

La version française suit

Published June 23, 2026:

Last week, Hydro One cut down all the vegetation at their power station site on Maple Grove Road in the Fairwinds community, including several mature trees.

There was no notification to residents, and no notification to my office. We contacted Hydro One, who say that the work was to protect critical infrastructure, and there’s no tree permit required. I’ve included their response below.

I understand the need to do maintenance and protect equipment, but why did they have to clear everything? And why wasn’t there advance notification to my office and to neighbours?

We’re continuing to push Hydro One for answers, and for some mitigation to offset the loss of trees, which provided shade and privacy for residents, as well as habitat for wildlife.

Response from Hydro One on June 19

Thank you for reaching out regarding the recent vegetation work near the hydro substation in the Maple Grove Road and Santolina Street area. We appreciate you sharing the concerns raised by residents.

The work in question was carried out on Hydro One–owned property as part of planned vegetation maintenance around the station. This work is required to maintain safe and reliable operation of the facility, ensure clear access to infrastructure, and address vegetation that was encroaching on the station and its perimeter fencing.

In this instance, vegetation was cleared along the full perimeter of the site, including the removal of dead or declining trees and additional growth that was interfering with the station or posed a potential risk to the equipment. While we understand this has resulted in a noticeable change to the surrounding vegetation, the work was necessary to meet our safety, maintenance, and operational requirements.

With respect to notification, this type of routine maintenance work is conducted on Hydro One property and does not typically involve advance notice to adjacent residents. That said, our crews did engage with a number of residents onsite during the work and responded to questions where possible.

We recognize the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with the surrounding community and understand that the removal of vegetation, particularly where it has provided screening, can be concerning. The work is not yet fully complete, and follow-up activities are planned, including site clean-up and restoration measures such as reseeding, which will help improve the overall condition of the area.

We are happy to continue working with your office to address any outstanding questions or concerns from residents. Please reach out if you require any additional information.

Construction of a new bus stop on Abbott Street near École secondaire catholique Paul-Desmarais is expected to start the week of July 6, 2026.

The stop is located at the south-west corner of Abbott Street and Robert Grant Avenue, and work should be completed by back-to-school in the late summer. The new bus stop for Route 163 will provide more convenient access for students at the school and nearby residents. (A bus stop on the north side will also be installed soon.)

To accommodate the work, there will be some lane reductions/closures that will impact traffic over the course of the summer, but the roads and sidewalks will remain open.

Some good news: Yesterday, Planning & Housing Committee rejected the proposal to add land west of Stittsville (along Fernbank Road) to the urban boundary.

It still needs to go to City Council next week, and I’m confident they will reject it as well.

Thank you to residents who wrote in with their feedback and took the time to delegate at committee.

But a heads up: This file isn’t finished. In 2027, the City has to update its Official Plan growth projections and land use planning. It’s a requirement from the province. And it’s likely that it will mean more land has to be added *somewhere* at the edge of the suburbs as new urban expansion land.
So definitely a file that residents will need to stay engaged on heading into 2027.

We’ll continue to share updates at glengower.ca/development/
